AUSTIN, Texas – Texas senior Imani Boyette looks to become the 38th player in UT women's basketball history to join the exclusive 1,000-point club as the No. 11/8 Longhorns prepare to face Rice at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday at Tudor Fieldhouse in Houston, Texas. Boyette enters Saturday's game at Rice with 992 career points, needing just eight more to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Boyette also ranks fifth in Texas history with 203 career blocks.
The Longhorns (2-0) are coming off an 86-33 victory against Northwestern State on Wednesday afternoon. Boyette turned in her 29th career double-double with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Texas shot 52.2 percent (35-of-67) from the field in the game, holding the Demons to just 26.7 percent (12-of-15) shooting.
Texas and Rice are meeting for the 35th time in the history of the two programs with the Longhorns leading the all-time series 33-1, including a 15-1 mark when the game is being played in Houston.
Rice (0-2) is under the direction of first-year head coach Tina Langley, who spent the last seven seasons as Maryland's associate head coach. The Terrapins were 195-49 during her tenure and made Final Four appearances in each of her last two seasons. The Owls were predicted to finish 12th out of 14 teams in Conference USA this season. Rice graduated five seniors, which included last year's leading scorer and rebounder Christal Porter, who ranked ninth in the nation in rebounds per game (11.7) a year ago.
QUICK NOTES
- Texas ranks sixth all-time in NCAA Division I women's basketball history with 983 wins. The Longhorns are one of only 13 programs nationally to have eclipsed the 900-victory plateau. Texas is looking to join the exclusive club of three teams who have achieved the 1,000-win milestone.
- The Longhorns lead the all-time series with Rice, 33-1.
- As a team last season, Texas averaged 16.3 turnovers per game and lost the turnover margin by -1.3. Through two games this season, the Longhorns are averaging just 10.0 turnovers per game and are winning the turnover margin +12. Texas had nine turnovers on Wednesday against Northwestern State.
- Sophomore guard Brooke McCarty is off to a strong start so far this season. She is averaging a squad-best 18.5 points per game, including a career-high 22 in the season opener against UTSA last Saturday. She also has made a team-high seven three-pointers, averaging a team-high 27.5 minutes per game.
