AUSTIN, Texas — On Saturday night at Darrell K. Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium, Texas' offense rang up 598 total yards, including eight plays of 20-or-more yards, while the defense managed six sacks as the Longhorns (4-5, 3-3 Big 12 Conference) rolled past Kansas (0-9, 0-6 Big 12 Conference), 59-20.
The 59 points marked the first time that UT had scored 50-or-more in a contest since putting up 56 in a win over New Mexico State to open the 2013 campaign, a stretch of 33 games.
Texas redshirt freshman quarterback Jerrod Heard went 13-for-23 for 201 yards passing and tossed an 84-yard, first-quarter TD strike to freshman wide receiver John Burt. The TD toss marked the ninth longest passing play in school history, the second-longest thrown by a rookie quarterback and the third-longest catch by a freshman wide receiver in Texas history. Junior quarterback Tyrone Swoopes was 6-for-7 passing for 98 yards and rushed out of the "18 Wheeler" package for 59 yards with a career-high four rushing touchdowns.
Longhorns' sophomore running back D'Onta Foreman rushed for a career-high 157 of Texas' 299 team rushing yards and managed a career-long 93-yard TD scamper during the third quarter.
After stopping Kansas on its opening drive of the contest, Texas' offense needed just one play to take a quick 7-0 lead. Starting at the UT 16-yard line, Heard unleashed an 84-yard TD bomb to Burt, who promptly broke a tackle and raced for the opening score.
The Longhorns lead soon expanded to 10 points with 8:56 left on the first-half clock as senior kicker Nick Rose finished off a nine-play, 54-yard drive with a 29-yard field goal. Key on the scoring drive for the Burnt Orange & White was a 37-yard completion on 3rd and 12 from Heard to sophomore wideout Lorenzo Joe.
Just 1:29 later, an interception and 36-yard return down the sideline by junior safety Dylan Haines set Texas up with a first and goal at the Kansas four-yard line. A pair of rushes from Swoopes covered the distance to pay dirt allowing the Longhorns to move to a commanding 17-0, first-quarter advantage.
Desperate to cut into the lead, the Jayhawks put together its first sustained drive late in the opening stanza. Having marched to the UT 33 and faced with a 4th and two situation, KU running back Ke'aun Kinner scampered for 14 yards and a vital first down. On the very next play, De'Andrew Mann took a Ryan Willis screen pass to the one-yard line before fumbling. KU wide receiver Shakiem Barbel jumped on the loose ball in the end zone for the TD, cutting the Jayhawks deficit to 17-7.
Another Kansas turnover, this one via a muffed punt, helped Texas restore its 17-point advantage with 11:58 remaining in the first half. After freshman Kirk Johnson recovered the loose ball at the UT 17, Swoopes again finished things off, scoring his second rushing TD of the night on a one-yard dive to make it 24-7.
The offensive shootout continued on the very next drive as Kansas moved back within 10 points by going 59 yards on 12 plays to score.
KU threatened to tighten things up even more with 7:24 left on the first half clock after a Texas fumble set the Jayhawks up with first and goal at the UT seven-yard line. The Longhorns defense made a huge goal line stand, however, stopping Mann on a fourth down play at the UT 1 to take over possession.
A last second FG attempt by KU ricocheted off the right upright and bounced away as the Burnt Orange & White took a 10-point lead to the break.
Just 4:59 into the third quarter, Texas struck for another big play as Foreman took off on a 93-yard TD jaunt, the third longest run in school history, to push the UT advantage to 31-14.
With the help of a key fourth and five conversion on their next drive, the Longhorns used a Foreman burst up the middle for a nine-yard score to extend their lead even further to a game-high 24 points.
From there, Texas' offense blew the game completely open via a 21-point fourth quarter. A 40-yard catch to christen the fourth quarter by sophomore wide receiver Armanti Foreman, and 44 and 10-yard rushes by Swoopes, his third and fourth rushing TDs of the game, expanded the score to 59-14.
Kansas added a garbage-time score on a 19-yard pass from Keaton Perry to Darious Craley with 59 seconds left, but that was all as UT wrapped up a dominant league victory.
