Longhorns post four singles wins to pull away from the Lady Raiders.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas surrendered the doubles point but produced four hard-fought singles wins, including two over ranked opponents, as the Longhorns (5-8, 2-2 Big 12) held off No. 18 Texas Tech (12-4, 2-1 Big 12) by a 4-2 count Sunday at Caswell Tennis Center.
Texas Tech won the first and second doubles courts to assume a 1-0 lead before Texas two-time All-American Breaunna Addison evened the tally with a 6-2, 6-0 win at first singles. The Lady Raiders reclaimed the lead with a straight-sets win at fourth singles, but the Longhorns yielded nothing further.
Senior Lina Padegimaite staved off a stiff first-set challenge from Tech's 120th-ranked Sabrina Federici at fifth singles before closing out the set, 6-4. The Lithuanian made short work of Federici in set two and won by a 6-2 count to even the match at two.
Texas freshman Ryann Foster outlasted Tech's Gabriela Talaba at second singles and produced a 6-3, 6-4 win to give the Horns a 3-2 lead. The Lady Raiders forced third sets at the third and sixth positions and assumed 5-3 third-set leads on both courts but failed to close out the matches.
UT sophomore Neda Koprcina fell behind Tech's 67th-ranked Sarah Dvorak 5-3 at third singles, but the Croatian held serve and broke Dvorak after saving a match point to even the set at five. Koprcina held serve for a 6-5 lead, and on match point in Dvorak's ensuing service game, Dvorak smacked a forehand wide right to give Koprcina the win and Texas the match victory.
Likewise on court six, UT's Lana Groenvynck trailed Tech's Katelyn Jackson 5-3 in the third set before ultimately taking a 6-5 lead. The match progressed to a tiebreaker and was suspended when Koprcina nailed down her match-clinching victory.
Texas resumes Big 12 play later this week when it visits Iowa State and West Virginia.
