STILLWATER, Okla. – Seventh-ranked Texas Men's Tennis opened Big 12 Conference play with a 4-3 win over Oklahoma State on Friday night in Stillwater.
Texas (15-2, 1-0 Big 12) took an early 3-0 advantage by winning the doubles point and the first two singles matches.
UT's 41st-ranked doubles team of Lloyd Glasspool and Søren Hess-Olesen opened with their fourth win over a ranked opponent, defeating 24th-ranked Jakob Sude and Arjun Kadhe, 7-6(2). Juniors Nick Naumann and Michael Riechmann clinched the doubles point with a win over Lukas Finzelberg and Jurence Mendoza at line three, 6-4.
Sophomore George Goldhoff won by default at court four and senior No. 72 Adrien Berkowicz defeated Arjun Kadhe in straight sets at court three, 6-4, 6-2, to give Texas a 3-0 advantage.
Oklahoma State (15-4) then rallied to tie the dual match, 3-3, after winning at singles positions one, two and five.
It marked the first match of the season Texas has lost at both singles positions one and two, featuring senior All-Americans No. 1 Hess-Olesen and No. 37 Glasspool.
Hess-Olesen, battling illness this week, saw his 17-match winning streak come to an end against No. 87 Jakob Sude on court one, 6-4, 6-2. Glasspool was edged in a third-set tiebreakder by Lucas Gerch on court two, 6-0, 2-6, 7-6(4).
The Longhorns are still a combined 30-3 on its top-two singles positions this season.
With the match tied, 3-3, senior Clement Homs clinched the team win for UT by defeating Nicolai Ferrigno in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Homs improves to 4-0 this season after recovering from injury earlier this month.
Texas continues its Big 12-opening weekend at No. 1 Oklahoma on Sunday at 1 p.m. Central.
