Sprinter among best athletes in NCAA
AUSTIN, Texas – After announcing its updated watch list for the men on Wednesday, the USTFCCCA announced the March women's watch list for the 2015 Bowerman, and Texas sprinter Courtney Okolo is still among the favorites to win the prestigious award.
This season Okolo has posted the No. 2 time in the NCAA in the 400 meters and helped guide the Longhorns to the team title at the Big 12 Championships. Okolo attempted an unprecedented double as she won the 600 yards and then ran in the 400 meters final 30 minutes later. She finished fourth in the 400 and then ran a leg of the 4x400 meter relay that helped seal the victory for the Longhorns as they led by only 4.5 points going into the final event.
Texas also will enter the NCAA Championships next week with the No. 1 time in the 4x400 meter relay as well. That time was set at the Tyson Invitational.
Okolo was a finalist for The Bowerman in 2014 after winning the outdoor title in the 400 meters and breaking the collegiate record at the Big 12 Championships with a time of 50.03 seconds. She was a force in the event both indoors and out and helped Texas win the 4x400 meter relay at the NCAA outdoor meet while setting an NCAA Championship meet record. In just two years at Texas, Okolo has already amassed eight first team All-America honors.
No other Big 12 Conference teams are recognized on the March watch list for the women, and only two of the 10 student-athletes represents a team from outside the power conferences.
Okolo and the Longhorns face the nation's best next weekend at the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She will compete in the 400 meters and the 4x400.
