Sprinter shines for Team USA
AUSTIN, Texas – Before she begins her senior season for the Texas Longhorns this fall, sprinter Courtney Okolo won a pair of gold medals for Team USA this weekend at the North America Central America Caribbean Championships.
Okolo crossed the line first in the 400 meters with a time of 51.57 seconds to win easily on Sunday in San Jose, Costa Rica. American teammate Kala Funderburk finished second in 52.22 to give Team USA a 1-2 punch in the event. During the preliminaries, Okolo ran 50.82 seconds to set a NACAC Championships record.
Okolo closed the meet with another record-breaking performance. She ran the anchor leg of the victorious 4x400 meter relay that finished in 3:25.39 to set a new NACAC record. The time was nearly four seconds faster than the previous meet record.
Okolo's two medals add to the great successes of the Longhorns all summer in representing Team USA at various championships. Texas Track & Field student-athletes won three gold medals at the Pan American Games and six total, including four gold, at the Pan American Junior Championships.
Texas looks to take the international experiences of Okolo and her teammates this summer to build and make 2016 another special year for the Longhorns.
