AUSTIN, Texas – No. 3 Texas Volleyball improved to 2-0 on the season after sweeping UC Irvine, 3-0 (25-13, 25-7, 26-24) in the fourth match of the American Campus Classic on Saturday afternoon at Gregory Gym.
Senior Amy Neal led the Longhorns with 10 kills (.381), 10 digs and four aces for her second-straight match with 10 or more kills and hitting .375 or better (11 kills, .375 versus Rice).
Junior Chiaka Ogbogu and senior Molly McCage led the blocking charge with five each, while also finishing with nine and five kills, respectively. Ogbogu's .500 hitting percentage was a match best.
As a team, the Longhorns out-blocked UCI, 11.0 to 5.0 and held the Anteaters to a .033 hitting percentage.
Texas jumped out to an early 6-2 lead after three-consecutive service aces from Neal in the first set. The Anteaters fought back, winning two of the next three points, but the Longhorns went on another 5-0 run to take an 11-4 lead with kills by Ogbogu and Johnson. Kills from Ogbogu, Prieto Cerame and McCage extended UT's lead to 10 before closing out the set on a 6-1 run, 25-14.
The Longhorns controlled set two early, jumping out to a 6-1 lead. UCI closed the lead to within three at 7-4, but Texas' 6-1 run to follow gave it a 13-5 advantage. From there, the Horns only allowed two more points and closed out the set, 25-7.
The third set was a different story as UC Irvine went on an 8-3 run to take a 14-9 lead. The Horns fought back, but the Anteaters kept the lead until Texas evened the score at 17 and then took the lead on a 7-0 run at 19-17. UC Irvine did not fold, taking the lead again, 21-19. A kill by Ogbogu pulled Texas to within one, but a net violation gave UCI a two-point advantage once again. Neither team led by more than two until the Longhorns pulled away to win the set, 26-24 and close out the match.
Texas will return to the court on Saturday night to host LSU at 7:30 p.m. in the last match of the American Campus Classic.
