KAZAN, Russia – Texas-Ex Michael Klueh helped the United States earn a silver medal in the 800-meter freestyle relay Friday on day six of swimming at the 2015 FINA World Championships.
Klueh, who helped Texas win the NCAA 800 free relay title as a senior in 2009, joined countrymen Reed Malone, Michael Weiss and Conor Dwyer Friday in the 800m freestyle relay preliminary round. Klueh split 1 minute, 47.67 seconds on the relay's third leg, and the relay qualified second for the evening finals at 7:08.55.
The American relay featuring Ryan Lochte and the aforementioned Dwyer, Malone and Weiss went on to win silver in the finals at 7:04.75. Great Britain won gold at 7:04.33 while Australia claimed the bronze at 7:05.34. Klueh receives a silver medal for his efforts in the preliminary round.
Elsewhere at the FINA World Championships, Texas sophomore Joseph Schooling qualified seventh for the 100m butterfly final to be contested Saturday. The three-time NCAA champion representing Singapore clocked 51.40 seconds to earn his second championship finals berth of the week. He reached the 50m butterfly final and placed seventh in that event on Monday.
Schooling won the 100 and 200-yard butterfly events and helped Texas to victory in the 400-yard medley relay at the 2015 NCAA Championships.
Closer to home, UT junior Jack Conger earned the No. 2 seed for tonight's 200m butterfly final behind Michael Phelps at the USA Swimming National Championships in San Antonio. Conger also secured the top seed in the 200m freestyle but scratched that event in favor of the 200m butterfly. The Rockville, Maryland, native is the event's American record holder at 200 yards.
NCAA champion Clark Smith will join Conger in the 200m butterfly final, as will UT senior John Martens. Incoming freshman Townley Haas is the fourth seed for tonight's 200m freestyle final.
Fresh off of a pair personal bests Thursday in the 200m individual medley, Madisyn Cox qualified fifth for the women's 200m freestyle final at 1:59.90.
Tonight's finals at the USA Swimming National Championships get underway at 6 p.m. CT. A live video stream will be available free of charge at USASwimming.org.
