Longhorns and Cowboys meet in afternoon battle

Texas will face the No. 24/22 Oklahoma State Cowboys at 2:30 p.m. Saturday from Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The Longhorns (1-2) are coming off a 45-44 loss to Cal. OSU enters Austin following a 69-14 victory over UTSA. The game will kick off at 2:30 p.m. Central and air nationally on ESPN. • Saturday's game will open Big 12 Conference play for both the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma State Cowboys.
• Texas enters the contest after a near comeback against the Cal Golden Bears, falling 45-44. The Longhorns trailed by 21 points in the fourth quarter and scored three touchdowns to pull within one point, but the tying PAT was missed with 1:11 remaining on the clock.
• Redshirt freshman quarterback Jerrod Heard set a school record for total offense in the loss to Cal with 527 yards. He passed for 364 yards and ran for 163 to break Vince Young's record of 506 total yards.
Scouting the Cowboys
• The Cowboys break into the rankings this week. They are No. 24 in the AP Poll and No. 22 according to the coaches.
• Oklahoma State routed UTSA on Saturday by the final score of 69-14. The Cowboys poured it on late with four touchdowns in the fourth quarter and amassed a total of 529 yards for the contest.
• The Cowboys are averaging 508.7 yards per game on offense, as they have emerged as one of the top attacks in the Big 12 Conference over the last few years.
• Quarterback Mason Rudolph averages 315.7 yards passing and has five touchdowns on the year.
• One of the top targets for the Cowboys' offense is David Glidden. He has 12 catches through three games for an average of 94.3 yards per game and has hauled in three touchdowns.
Series History
• Texas leads the all-time series against Oklahoma State 24-5 after the Longhorns won last year's meeting in Stillwater, 28-7.
• The series has been somewhat even of late with three of Oklahoma State's five wins all-time against the Longhorns coming in the last six years. The series is 3-3 since 2009.
• Before winning three of the last five meetings starting in 2010, the last win Oklahoma State had against Texas was in 1997 in Stillwater, 42-16.
• Texas is 14-4 at home against Oklahoma State.
Texas in Big 12 Openers
• Texas is 16-3 in Big 12 Conference opening games, including wins in 15 of the last 16.
• The only losses came to Oklahoma State (1997) and Kansas State (1998, 2007).
• Texas is 9-1 when its Big 12 opener is at home with the lone loss coming to K-State in 2007.
Heard's Record-Setting Performance
• After playing just six snaps in the season-opening loss at Notre Dame, redshirt freshman QB Jerrod Heard had his name called just prior to kick in the week two win against Rice and responded with a solid performance against the Owls. Heard put up record-setting numbers despite making just his second career start (and playing in his third collegiate game) in Saturday's 45-44 loss to Cal.

• Set a UT single-game total offense mark with 527 yards (364 pass/163 rush). This performance topped the previous mark of 506 (239 pass/267 rush) by Vince Young at Oklahoma State in 2005.
• Became the second UT quarterback in school history to throw for 300 yards and rush for 100 yards, joining Colt McCoy (304 pass/175 rush) at Texas A&M on Nov. 26, 2009
• Led team to 650 yards of total offense, the eighth-highest single-game mark in UT history
• Completed 20-of-31 passes for 364 yards, including a long of 54 yards
• His 364 yards passing ranked 10th in UT single-game history and was the second-highest total by a freshman in UT history (Major Applewhite had 408 vs. Oklahoma State in 1998).
• Became the first UT freshman QB to throw for 300 yards since Colt McCoy (308) in the 2006 Alamo Bowl vs. Iowa
• Rushed 24 times for 163 yards (6.8 avg) with three TDs, including a long of 45 yards

Total Team Effort
• Texas tallied 650 total yards on offense in the 45-44 loss to Cal last week. That number ranks eighth in school history for a single game.
• The last time Texas had 600+ yards on offense was in the season opener against New Mexico State in 2013 when the Longhorns set the school record of 715 yards.
• Texas ran for 286 yards rushing and an average of 5.5 yards per carry.
• Jerrod Heard threw for 364 yards with four different players grabbing at least four receptions.
Daje Breaking Away
• Receiver Daje Johnson has emerged as one of Jerrod Heard's favorite targets. He hauled in five catches for a career-high 145 yards in the loss to Cal for an average of 29 yards per catch.
• His 145 yards also put him among the best performances in school history. He now ranks 45th in school history for receiving yards in a game. His previous career-high was 85 yards at Kansas State in 2012.
• Johnson had 99 yards in the first quarter alone on two catches.
• He had catches of 45, 55 and 26 yards to provide a deep threat and spark for the Longhorns.
