AUSTIN, Texas -- Two field goals over the final 1:33 of regulation helped No. 24 Oklahoma State (4-0, 1-0 Big 12 Conference) rally past Texas (1-3, 0-1 Big 12) on Saturday at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, 30-27.
The Longhorns held a 27-24 lead with 1:33 left on the clock when OSU kicker Ben Grogan drilled a game-tying 41 yarder. With a final chance for a potential game-winning drive, UT went three-and-out and managed only a 10-yard punt off a fumbled snap as the Cowboys took possession at Texas' 18-yard line with 36 ticks left. After just one play, Grogan successfully knocked home a 40-yarder to complete the late comeback.
Oklahoma State out-gained the Horns by a 395-290 count with Texas managing a 171-103 advantage in rushing yards. Redshirt freshman quarterback Jerrod Heard was 9-for-17 passing for 119 yards and rushed for 48 more, while senior running back Johnathan Gray led the Burnt Orange & White on the ground with 55 yards.
UT junior defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway managed his first career fumble recovery, returning it for a 34-yard TD early in the second quarter, while freshman defensive back Holton Hill returned an interception for a 41-yard score in the third. The occurrence of two defensive touchdowns in the same game marked the first time the Longhorns had accomplished the feat since Oct. 31, 2009, at Oklahoma State.
After forcing a three-and-out on Texas' opening drive, Oklahoma State struck first on the scoreboard with 10:59 left in the first quarter. With OSU's drive extended because of a key third-down penalty on the UT secondary, quarterback Mason Rudolph escaped from significant pressure on third-and-eight at the 17 and managed to locate wide receiver Brandon Shepard in an end zone crowd to make it 7-0.
On the first play of Texas' ensuing drive, Heard struck for a big play, hitting senior wide receiver Marcus Johnson in stride for a 47-yard gain down to the Cowboy 28-yard line. Following three consecutive rushes that netted a combined five yards, senior kicker Nick Rose was summoned into the contest, drilling a 41-yard attempt to cut UT's deficit to four.
The Cowboys immediately extended their advantage as Rudolph finished off a five-play, 75-yard drive with a four-yard TD rush through the left side.
The track meet continued unabated with time running short in the first quarter as the Longhorns moved 46 yards on 13 plays before bogging down at the OSU 26. Rose made it 2-for-2 on field goals by hitting from 46 yards out as the Burnt Orange & White clawed back within eight.
With the offenses making all the noise during the opening quarter, it was Texas' defense that delivered the big play on the initial snap of the second stanza. As Rudolph dropped back into the pocket to throw, he promptly lost the handle on the football. Coming out of the crowd with his first career fumble recovery was Ridgeway, and the Mansfield, Texas, native rumbled 34 yards for a score to draw UT within 14-13.
Following a 34-yard Oklahoma State FG, Gray got UT back in business with a 42-yard jaunt to midfield. That ignited what would eventually amount to a 12-play, 97-yard scoring drive to hand the Horns their first lead of the contest, with 5:08 left on the halftime clock, 20-17. During the drive, junior quarterback Tyrone Swoopes converted two key fourth downs with the second coming on a seven-yard TD rush (on fourth-and-two).
Midway through the third quarter, it was Oklahoma State's turn to drive virtually the entire field as the Cowboys advanced 98 yards over 13 plays. J.W. Walsh did the honors via a one-yard TD toss to Jeremy Seaton as OSU re-took the advantage, 24-20.
OSU had an opportunity to potentially extend their lead after securing a tipped Heard interception at the OSU 39, but a third down sack from Texas sophomore defensive end Naashon Hughes emphatically finished off a Cowboy three-and out.
That set the stage for more fireworks from the Texas defense as Rudolph's third-and-11 pass to the right sideline was intercepted by Hill. The Houston, Texas, product returned the oskie 41 yards untouched for the go-ahead score, granting the Horns a 27-24 lead with 1:34 left in the third.
With the Cowboys again on the move early in the fourth quarter, the UT "D" responded with another pick, this one at Texas' 32 by Haines. The Lago Vista, Texas, native's 29-yard return set Texas up in OSU territory with a chance to add some valuable insurance on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, three plays added up to six total yards as the Horns were forced to punt.
Needing three for a tie and a TD to take the lead, Oklahoma State took over at their own 49-yard line with 4:03 left on the clock. The Cowboys drove as far as the UT 19 before a penalty forced OSU to settle for a game-tying 41-yard Grogan field goal.
Texas received the ball with 1:26 remaining with a chance for a late winning drive, but went three-and-out against OSU's defense. On the punt attempt, the snap was dropped and a scramble resulted in a 10-yard effort that went out of bounds at the Texas 18.
Oklahoma State ran just one running play for a single yard before Grogan was brought into the contest to nail the game-winning, 40-yard FG with six seconds left as the Cowboys prevailed 30-27.
