Longhorns sweep day-night doubleheader before heading west this weekend.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 12 Texas (2-0) swept the doubles session and claimed five of six singles contests on its way to a 6-1 win over Lamar Tuesday night at Weller Indoor Tennis Center on the grounds of The University of Texas Golf Club. The Longhorns finished off a sweep of its day-night doubleheader after defeating Abilene Christian earlier in the day, 7-0.
"It was a long day, and we got to play a lot of tennis," said 16th-year Texas head coach Michael Center. "Lamar did a great job and pushed us in some spots today. I thought our guys responded, though we have a lot of work to do. It was nice to get two wins to start the season. We're excited to head to Seattle this weekend."
Sophomore John Mee and freshman Harrison Scott sealed the first doubles result for Texas with their 6-1 win over Juuso Laitinen and Sebastian Santibanez at third doubles.
Junior George Goldhoff and redshirt freshman Julian Zlobinsky clinched the doubles point with their 6-3 win over the Cardinals' Michael Feucht and Benny Schweizer at second doubles. UT senior Michael Riechmann and sophomore Adrian Ortiz held on for a 7-6 (5) win at first doubles over Lamar's Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Nikita Lis.
Lamar evened the tally at one with a win at sixth singles, but UT's Ortiz put the Horns back on top with his 6-0, 6-1 win over Santibanez at third singles. Scott pushed the Texas lead to 3-1 by way of his 6-2, 6-1 win over Lamar's Lis at second singles. Zlobinsky clinched the team win for the Longhorns by toughing out a 6-2, 7-6 (3) win over Hoogenboezem at fifth singles.
Goldhoff gutted out a lengthy three-setter and held off Lamar's Feucht at first singles, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 1-0 (10-4) to give the Horns a 5-1 lead. Riechmann closed out the 6-1 Texas win with his 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory over Schweizer at fourth singles.
Texas heads to the Pacific Northwest this weekend and takes on UCSB and Washington in Seattle.
