Longhorns improve to 3-0, await Washington Sunday in Seattle.
SEATTLE – No. 12 Texas (3-0) took two of three doubles contests to claim the doubles point and won five of six singles contests on its way to a 6-1 win over UC-Santa Barbara Saturday evening. The match was held indoors at The University of Washington's Nordstrom Tennis Center in advance of the Longhorns' contest Sunday against the host Huskies.
Texas opened the match by winning the doubles point for the third time in as many matches this season. UT junior George Goldhoff and redshirt freshman Julian Zlobinsky knocked off the Gauchos' Morgan Mays and Nicolas Moreno at second doubles, while Texas freshmen Colin Markes and Harrison Scott teamed up for a 6-1 win over Anders Holm and Chase Masciorini.
The Longhorns closed out the team victory with wins at singles positions one through five. Goldhoff knocked off Mays, 6-4, 6-3 at first singles, while Scott held off Nathan Eshmade by a 7-5, 6-3 count at second singles.
UT sophomore Adrian Ortiz rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Cody Rakela at fourth singles, and sophomore John Mee finished off the Gauchos' Oliver Sec by a 6-2, 7-6 margin at fifth singles.
"Our team is really coming together," said 16th-year Texas head coach Michael Center. "I thought our guys played really hard against a good UCSB team. We've got another tough one tomorrow and play Washington on its home courts. We need to keep working, but the guys have stuck together and have done a nice job.
Texas takes on Washington on Sunday at 11 a.m. Pacific, 1 p.m. Central. Live scoring and video will be available here.
