Longhorns host ITA Kick-Off Weekend event next weekend in Austin.
SEATTLE – No. 12 Texas (3-1) won the doubles point and added singles wins from redshirt freshman Julian Zlobinsky and sophomore Adrian Ortiz, but Washington (3-1) edged the Longhorns by a 4-3 count Sunday at Washington's Nordstrom Tennis Center.
Texas opened with victories at the second and first doubles positions to win the doubles point and assume a 1-0 lead. Junior George Goldhoff and Zlobinsky led off with a 6-2 win over Jake Douglas and Wendell Watanabe at second doubles.
The Longhorns nailed down the doubles point at the first position where Ortiz and senior Michael Riechmann held on for a 6-4 win over Piers Foley and Enzo Sommer. The remaining match at third doubles was suspended.
Washington assumed a 3-1 lead behind singles wins at the first, fifth and second singles positions. UT's Zlobinsky cut the Huskies' lead to 3-2 by way of his 7-5, 6-4 win over Foley at sixth singles. However, Washington clinched the team win with a straight-sets win at fourth singles.
Texas closed out the scoring with Ortiz's 7-6, 7-5 win over Washington's 121st-ranked Douglas at third singles.
"I give credit to Washington," said UT head coach Michael Center. "They played very well. We were not quite as sharp in some areas today, and we were exploited. Once again, I was pleased with our doubles. The guys played hard, but we still have a lot of room for improvement."
Texas welcomes Florida, Ole Miss and Texas Tech for two rounds of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event beginning next Saturday (Jan. 23) at Weller Indoor Tennis Center at The University of Texas Golf Club.
Texas takes on Florida and Ole Miss meets Texas Tech in the opening matches on Saturday. The winners meet Sunday for the right to advance to next month's ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
