Soccer gets two Hart goals in blanking Texas Tech, 2-0
10.21.2016 | Soccer
Senior forward Jasmine Hart registers a brace on scores at 23:02 and 55:45
AUSTIN, Texas – A brace (two goals) from senior forward Jasmine Hart helped power Texas soccer (8-7-1, 1-4-1 Big 12 Conference) to an important, 2-0 shutout victory over rival Texas Tech (8-6-2, 1-5-0 Big 12 Conference) on Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
By locating the twine at 23:02 and 55:45, Hart raised her total to four goals this season, ranking second on the team behind only Alexa Adams' five scores in 2016. Freshman defender Emma Jett was credited with her third and fourth assists of the year, while sophomore midfielder Katie Glenn registered her initial helper of the year on the opening tally. Hart and freshman forward Cyera Hintzen led the UT squad with seven shots each while the duo combined for seven of Texas' 11 shots on frame.
Between the pipes for the Longhorns, senior goalkeeper Paige Brown made six saves in registering her fourth career shutout.
Texas out-shot the Red Raiders by an overall total of 25-19, including 11-6 in shots on goal, and managed a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Both teams needed some time to feel their way into the match early on with Tech earning a third minute corner and Texas registering the first shot for either squad on a wide Hart shot at 3:49.
Things finally began to ramp up offensively at 10:10 as Texas Tech midfielder Jordan Duke forced Brown's first stop of the night on a header.
The Burnt Orange & White had a great chance for an early breakthrough during the 12th minute. Off a UT corner, TTU goalkeeper Lauren Watson raced off her line to try to corral the feed into the middle. She deflected it straight out front to senior midfielder Julia Dyche, who fired quickly from 18 yards out. With only a pair of Red Raiders stationed between the shot and the open net, one of the defenders managed to block the ball out of play over the right end line.
Two more Texas corner kicks in quick succession at 12:30 and 12:56 resulted in headers by junior midfielder Morgan Murphy that were saved and high, respectively.
The UT pressure continued as Hintzen and Hart each forced Watson stops on long tries from 25-plus yards out in the 21st and 22nd minutes.
A Texas Tech turnover at the top of their defensive 18 nearly cost them at 22:19 as Hintzen took possession and tried a quick shot. Her effort traveled straight to the goalkeeper, however, for a routine save.
All the work finally paid off for the Horns at 23:02 as Texas secured a 1-0 advantage. Glenn started things off by passing up the right wing to Jett. The rookie defender delivered a cross into the right edge of the 18 where Hart was waiting to launch a header over Watson from 11 yards out into the left side netting.
The Red Raiders upped their pressure in a bid for a quick equalizer following the UT score. First, forward Jade King fired a try from eight yards out on the left side that scraped the outside of the left post at 24:18. Then, at 30:48, Duke attempted a shot from the top left corner of the 18 that traveled straight in Brown's waiting arms for a save.
Tech continued to fire away down the stretch in the opening half as three combined shots from Tatum Barton and Mary Heiberger were either high of frame or blocked by the UT defense.
Out of the break, Texas wasted no time making an offensive impression as Hintzen quickly forced a stop at the left post on a nine-yard try.
Over the open 6:39 of the second stanza, the Longhorns registered five total shots. The best chances came off a 2-v-2 break by Hintzen and Glenn. A bad touch by Hintzen on the counter forced some improvisation with eventual shots by Glenn and Dyche being blocked and saved, respectively.
During the 56th minute, Texas doubled its lead as Jett worked the ball up the left wing and again crossed into the middle. Standing just seven yards out, Hart managed a great touch to settle the feed, turned while marked tightly by a TTU defender and beat Watson easily for a 2-0 advantage.
Needing something quickly to get back into the match, Texas Tech nearly got one back at 71:22 as Barton tried her luck from 20 yards out. Brown quickly dove to her left and managed to deflect the shot away with her fingertips on a terrific save to preserve the two-goal lead.
With TTU continuing to shoot but missing frame either high or wide or striking efforts straight at Brown, Texas nearly added an insurance goal at 85:56. Hintzen moved up the left wing and working 1 v. 2 against a pair of Tech defenders, worked to launch a shot from 10 yards out that just scraped the outside of the right post.
The Red Raiders had one final opportunity at 89:11 to pull one back but a popped-up shot that deflected off the hip of leaping Tech midfielder Rebekah O'Brien dropped into Brown's hands for an easy save.
Texas Soccer Post-Match Quotes vs. Texas Tech – 10/21/16
Texas head coach Angela Kelly
On what she liked about her team in tonight's win: I thought we were well-organized. Texas Tech is a quality team with a great coach, and they were very well-organized. We knew we had to be well-organized, and I'm really proud of the squad because we followed the game plan to a T. I love the fact that Cyera Hintzen got so involved in the match; she found space for herself where there was no space. I've known all along and have been excited for her to be here, but I think she has now shown everybody that prolific goal scorer and the creative personality she can be. We're excited for another three years of that.
On the complete performance of the entire team: Once again, I think it's a whole team effort. In every single goal, there was movement. They followed and executed our game plan to a T, and I commend them on that. The lesson here is, in the face of all adversity, you still believe. Quite honestly, things haven't gone our way. This squad has stuck together, and they believe. Up against a very strong opponent, they had a fantastic performance at home and a clean sheet. Paige Brown had a full extension, fantastic save. There are lots of things: Cyera's performance, Jasmine's performance… but what about Atu [Mshana]? What about Izzy [Kerr]? What about Emma Jett? What about Julia [Dyche], the warrior in the midfield that hasn't been off the field? Katie Glenn was having a great match as well. I could just go down the line. We're just really proud of them because they finally got the joy and the release of their work, because this squad has worked. We have eleven newcomers and started five underclassmen tonight, so we're pretty excited.
Texas senior forward Jasmine Hart
On her two-goal performance in her penultimate home game as a senior: It was a huge game. Those two goals… I honestly don't know where they came from. On my second goal, the ball came into the box, I was there, and I was ready to finish into the back of the net. I knew I only had two games left on our home field, so I had to bring everything I had and make sacrifices. I found the back of the net, and I'm very excited about that.
On her second goal of the night: I just saw Emma Jett coming down the side, and I knew I had to get in the box. She crossed it, I saw Katie [Glenn] go up and I thought to myself okay, I need to be here just in case she misses it. I got my foot on it and realized we don't get many opportunities in the box, so I had to somehow get a shot off, and it just happened to go in.
On what the win means for the team's confidence moving forward: I think it really brings our confidence up. We really just needed to get a win, and I think this win got us going, so when we come in against West Virginia, we'll be prepared to play. This win really just got us going, and it just really brought up our confidence, and that's really what we needed, because we were a little down.
Texas freshman forward Cyera Hintzen
On holding a 1-0 lead at halftime and what the message was going into the second half: Coach Kelly told us that we were all doing our job together, and that it was really great. She told us that we had to go out, stick with our jobs and work hard together as a team because that was what was going to get us a win, not just individually, but just everyone working together and working hard. She just told us to keep it up and fight until the end.
On what the team has to do to upset West Virginia on Sunday: I think we need to come out with the same, if not more, intensity that we did against Texas Tech. We all know we needed to get this win and that will help us move forward. We just need to take it and go out and fight as hard as we can.
