Horns split short course meets against Indiana and Florida, finish the weekend with a pair of dual-meet wins.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Defending national champion Texas won five events and split its short course meets against host Indiana and Florida Saturday afternoon at the Hoosiers' Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center.
Texas knocked off Florida by a 182-99 count while falling to the host Hoosiers, 161.5-119.5. The three teams competed in the same format conducted in last year's two-day meet in Austin, which was contested in long course meters (50m pool) on Friday and the standard collegiate format, short course yards (25-yard pool), on Saturday. Texas split both contests on Friday, as well.
Rio Olympics gold medalist Clark Smith notched the Horns' first win of the day in one of his strongest dual-meet events, the 1,000-yard freestyle. The event's NCAA and American record holder, Smith was victorious by nearly 10 seconds and took the win in 9 minutes, 3.72 seconds.
Rio Olympics gold medalist Jack Conger, the American record holder in the 200-yard butterfly, gave Texas its second victory in the same event Saturday in 1:46.59. The three-meter diving event featured a tight contest among the top-three finishers, as Texas freshman Grayson Campbell took second with 390.95 points. All-America senior Mark Anderson placed fourth with 371.95 points.
All-America Jonathan Roberts and John Shebat paced a one-two Longhorns finish in the 200 backstroke. Roberts took the win in 1:45.46 while Shebat followed in second at 1:46.94. Junior Imri Ganiel logged the Horns' top performance in the 200 breaststroke with his 2:03.34 for second place.
Smith polished off his second victory of the day and joined fellow Olympic gold medalist Townley Haas atop the 500 freestyle. Smith, the event's 2015 NCAA champion, took the win in 4:20.33 while Haas, the event's 2016 NCAA champion, took second at 4:23.79. Conger finished off a sweep of the butterfly events with his winning mark of 47.15 at 100 yards.
Texas resumes dual-meet competition on Friday, Nov. 4 when it hosts N.C. State in Austin.
