Freshman Reagan Hathaway leads charge with impressive 4-for-4, two-HR, seven-RBI effort in victory
HOUSTON, Texas – After playing nothing but close games last weekend, No. 24 Texas softball (6-0) was due for an offensive explosion and got just that on Friday morning at the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational, utilizing a 13-run fourth inning and blasting four HR's as a team to highlight a commanding 17-2 (5 inn.) victory over Toledo (1-3).
In the process, the Longhorns established a new program single-game record for walks by drawing 14 free passes, breaking the old mark of 12 set at Kansas back on April 14, 2012. The Burnt Orange & White's 17 runs tied for the fourth-most scored in a single-game in program history, while the 15-run margin of victory equaled the fifth-largest by Texas in a single game.
Freshman right fielder Reagan Hathaway truly powered the offensive assault, managing a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate, three runs scored, the first two HR's of her brief career, a sacrifice fly and seven RBIs. The Lenexa, Kan., native came up just one RBI short of tying former Longhorn great Taylor Thom's single-game mark of eight RBIs set at Houston back on Feb. 16, 2013, and with 10 total bases, just two total bases short of tying Tallie Thrasher's mark of 12 set versus Missouri back on April 11, 2010.
Junior third baseman Celina Felix went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI while taking part in back-to-back HR's with Hathaway duringf the third inning. Junior shortstop Devon Tunning was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI from the lead-off spot in the line-up. Sophomore pinch hitter/catcher Randel Leahy was 1-for-1 with two tallies and two RBIs, while senior center fielder Lindsey Stephens (1-for-3, three runs, double), freshman pinch hitter Bekah Alcozer (walk, first collegiate RBI), senior right fielder Holly Kern (1-for-4, run), and senior catcher Erin Shireman (walk) all recorded single RBIs.
In the circle for the Horns, junior Tiarra Davis improved to a perfect 4-0 for the season by tossing a complete-game, allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and a pair of K's. The Henderson, Texas, native also helped her own cause at the plate by blasting a two-run HR as part of a 1-for-2, two-RBI hitting effort.
Texas jumped on Toledo starting pitcher Danni Ryan right from the start of the contest, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Tunning got things underway with a lead-off single and was soon joined on the base paths via consecutive walks from junior left fielder Stephanie Wong (0-1, two runs, three walks) and Stephens. With one down on a fielder's choice that cut down a runner at the plate, Hathaway stepped in and blasted a drive to the fence in center for a sacrifice fly as Wong raced home from 60 feet away to make it 1-0.
Issuing a lead-off walk to Toledo first baseman Samantha Showalter came back to hurt the Horns in the bottom of the second. With two retired, second baseman Megan Choate blasted a two-run HR to left, tying the score at 2-2.
The Longhorns wasted no time answering Toledo's long ball with a pair of their own during the top of the third. Felix started the power assault off with a towering solo drive to left on a 3-1 count. Hathaway soon made it back-to-back home runs for UT newcomers on a big solo shot to right center as the Texas re-took the lead at 4-2.
Hathaway made it a personal two-HR game in the top of the fourth, following up a Stephens lead-off double and a Felix walk by crushing a ball over the scoreboard in right to blow things open, 7-2. With Leahy stationed at second after a hit by a pitch and junior pinch hitter Taylor McAllister at first via walk, Tunning knocked in a run on a bloop single down the left field line to expand the advantage to six tallies. Stephens and Alcozer each walked with the bases loaded to force in two more runs as the lead grew to 10-2. A Hathaway two-RBI single, a Kern RBI base knock, a Leahy two-RBI single and a long Davis two-run HR to right exploded the gap to 17-2 as Texas eventually plated 13 runs in the fourth while sending 17 batters to the dish.
Needing a major rally to avoid an early end, Toledo's Showalter tried to get something going by christening the bottom of the fourth with a lead-off double. Unfortunately for the Rockets, Davis responded from the circle by retiring the next three batters she faced with an inning-ending strikeout to send the teams to the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Toledo earned a one-out walk from Ashley Maynard but could get nothing else as the Longhorns wrapped up a run-rule win to improve to 6-0.
