02.09.2016 | Women's Golf
Junior Haley Mills earned her second top-10 finish of the season with a tie for sixth.
ORLANDO, Fla. – Texas Women's Golf climbed two spots to finish the third and final round of the UCF Challenge in fourth place on Tuesday.
The Longhorns shot a 295 on the third round to climb from sixth to fourth place to tie their lowest finish of the 2015-16 season.
Four Texas golfers shot a 74 on the fourth round, with junior Haley Mills leading the Horns to finish the tournament 4-over par and in a tie for 6th.
Mills' other top-10 finish of the season came at the Jim West Challenge, where she tied for fifth.
Junior Julia Beck and sophomore Sophia Schubert also posted top-20 finishes, Beck climbing two spots after round two to tie for 16th and Schubert climbing three spots to tie for 19th.
It marks Beck's second top-20 finish of the season and Schubert's fourth.
Freshman Maddie Luitwieler was the fourth player to card a 74 on the third round, finishing in a tie for 41st, while senior Tezira Abe finished in a tie for 83rd.
Houston won the tournament with an 885, while East Carolina's F. Gustafsson Spang earned medalist honors at 3-under par.
Texas will continue its spring season February 21-23 at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate at the English Turn Country Club in New Orleans, La.
Post-Tournament Comments
Head Coach Ryan Murphy
On the conditions: We usually come to Florida for the warm weather, but we played in some very cold temperatures and 20 mph winds each day. There were difficult conditions for sure, but we handled it fairly well.
On Haley Mills: Haley's play this week was really solid. Her 72 and 73 were both really strong rounds in the conditions. And, anytime you're in the top 10, you've definitely played well, so I'm really proud of her effort.
On Schubert and Beck: Both Sophia and Julia had some solid play as well, although I know that neither of them are satisfied with their performances. Both are really close to playing some terrific golf.
On the finish: For us, a top five is a nice finish, but we have to be a lot cleaner around the golf course. We got beat by only six shots and those shots are coming from unforced errors at various places. We will be a great team by year's end, but we have to simply start by not beating ourselves.
