ATLANTA – With seven championship finalists, two consolation finalists and a 95-point lead over second-place California heading into tonight's finals, Texas is closing in on its 12th NCAA team title at the 2016 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at Georgia Tech.
Should Texas finish off its run to the title this evening, the Longhorns would tie Michigan for No. 1 all-time with 12 NCAA titles, and UT head coach Eddie Reese would pass former Ohio State coach Mike Peppe as the most decorated coach in the sport's history with 12 NCAA team titles.
Reese tied Peppe for the top spot with the Longhorns' 11th NCAA team title a year ago at The University of Iowa. Regardless of tonight's results, no school has won more titles (11) or posted more NCAA top-two finishes (22) than Texas since Reese took over prior to the 1978-79 season.
Saturday's preliminary round continues with the ongoing platform diving competition before the afternoon 1,650-yard freestyle heats commence at 3:55 p.m. ET.
Tonight's finals get underway at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT with the 1,650 freestyle featuring All-Americans Clark Smith and Townley Haas. Smith enters the event as the top seed while Haas is fresh off of a 200 freestyle swim that set NCAA, American and U.S. Open records Friday evening.
