OKLAHOMA CITY – The No. 6/7 University of Texas women's basketball team is in Oklahoma City, Okla., and on Saturday begins play in the Phillips 66 Women's Basketball Championship this weekend. The second-seeded Longhorns will face 10th-seeded Kansas in the quarterfinal round at 6 p.m. CT. in Chesapeake Energy Arena and the game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net.
The Longhorns (26-3, 15-3 Big 12 Conference) are seeking the program's second all-time Big 12 Tournament title, having also claimed the tournament crown in 2002-03. Texas holds an all-time record of 21-18 in the Big 12 Conference Tournament, including a 13-13 mark against current Big 12 members. The Longhorns have advanced to the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament in each of the past two seasons.
Texas finished second in the Big 12 Conference regular season, marking the first time that has happened since a second-place finish in 2004-05. The Longhorns have earned 26 wins, which marks their most since the 2003-04 season.
Senior Texas center Imani Boyette on Wednesday was named the Big 12 Conference's Co-Defensive Player of the Year, marking the first such honor in program history since that accolade was initiated prior to the 2006 season.
Boyette was one of five Longhorns who earned All-Big 12 honors as she also was named to the All-Big 12 First Team and the Big 12 All-Defensive Team. Sophomore guard Brooke McCarty also was named to the All-Big 12 First Team. Sophomore guard Ariel Atkins was an All-Big 12 Second Team selection, while senior guards Empress Davenport and Celina Rodrigo were All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honorees.
Boyette and McCarty are each averaging a team-leading 12.0 points per game, while Boyette leads the team in rebounds per game (9.1) and blocked shots per game (3.14). Rodrigo has dished out a squad-best 109 assists, while McCarty has logged a team-high 38 steals.
Texas and Kansas have met 31 times in the history of the two programs. The Longhorns lead the all-time series 21-10 and Texas has won seven consecutive meetings between the two squads. Texas has swept the season series against Kansas in each of the last three seasons.
Kansas enters Saturday's game with a 6-24 overall record. The Jayhawks went 0-18 in Big 12 Conference play, but defeated TCU 81-64 in Friday's Big 12 Conference Tournament First Round.
