Former Longhorn Michael McBroom wins 400m freestyle at Arena Pro Swim Series

Texas-Ex Michael McBroom claims the 400m free while a pair of UT women's signees reach finals.
MESA, Ariz. – Texas-Ex Michael McBroom used a strong final 100 meters to win the 400m freestyle Friday evening on night two of the USA Swimming Arena Pro Swim Series at Mesa.
McBroom, a silver medalist in the 800m freestyle at the 2013 World Championships, ran down Conor Dwyer just after the 300m mark and took the win in the 400m freestyle at 3 minutes, 49.04 seconds.
A native of The Woodlands, McBroom became UT's first and still only NCAA champion in the 1,650 freestyle in 2011 as a sophomore at Texas upon transferring from Minnesota. McBroom continues to train in Austin under UT head coach Eddie Reese and associate head coach Kris Kubik.
UT All-America junior Clark Smith placed third in the same 400m freestyle championship final just behind Dwyer at 3:49.96.
UT All-America junior Jack Conger placed fourth in the 200m butterfly championship final at 1:59.83. Former Longhorn and London Olympics silver medalist Jimmy Feigen won the 50m freestyle consolation final at 22.29, while former Longhorn Austin Surhoff placed sixth in the 100m backstroke consolation final at 58.07.
Texas signee Kaitlin Harty, the younger sister of Texas freshman swimmer Ryan Harty, placed fourth in the 100m backstroke championship final at 1:01.11, just ahead of the event's reigning Olympic gold medalist, Missy Franklin. Texas freshman Joanna Evans added an eighth-place mark of 4:18.73 in the 400m freestyle championship final.
Texas signee Lauren Case took eighth in the 200m butterfly championship final at 2:14.35. Former Longhorn Kaitlin Pawlowicz placed eighth in the event's consolation final at 2:20.17.
Former Longhorn Laura Sogar took sixth in the 200m breaststroke championship final at 2:29.58 while UT All-America junior Madisyn Cox placed fourth in the consolation final at 2:32.53.
