Top Danish prospect Christian Sigsgaard joins Yuya Ito of Japan in the Longhorns’ class of newcomers this fall.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas head men's tennis coach Michael Center announced Friday the signing of Davis Cup veteran Christian Sigsgaard (pronounced SIGS-gard) of Denmark to a National Letter of Intent. Sigsgaard will join the Longhorns' men's tennis program in advance of the 2016 fall semester.
"Christian has represented Denmark twice at the Davis Cup, and I would compare him to his fellow countryman (and former UT All-American) Søren Hess-Olesen with a little different kind of game," Center said.
"I look for Christian to have a tremendous impact on our program for years to come. He is an outstanding player, and Christian is one of the few guys who will walk into college with not only a lot of Davis Cup experience, but a win over a top-100 player who has played grand slam events."
Sigsgaard, who has ranked among the top-three among the Danish junior ranks since age 14, has represented his homeland twice in Davis Cup competition over the last six months. He opened last month's Davis Cup contest against Georgia with a four-set win over Nikoloz Basilashvili, who reached the round of 32 at Wimbledon last year and has ranked as high as No. 86 in the world. Sigsgaard locked up Denmark's 5-0 Davis Cup win over Georgia with a straight-sets win over Irakli Metreveli.
Sigsgaard made his first Davis Cup appearance last fall against Sweden and took on the No. 3 junior player in the world, Mikael Ymer, whom he challenged before falling in five sets.
Formerly the top-ranked junior in Denmark in the Under-16 division, Sigsgaard has won three national singles titles and four national doubles titles in the junior ranks. He finished as a doubles runner-up at the Under-16 European Championships, and he became the first junior player in a decade to reach the finals of the Danish senior national championships.
A two-time champion at ITF Grade 4 events, Sigsgaard reached the second round of the 2015 Australian Open Junior Championships.
Sigsgaard joins Yuya Ito of Japan, a fall 2015 signee, to finalize the Longhorns' class of newcomers for next season.
"Christian and Yuya have been putting up some really nice results, and they're both eager to get to Texas," Center added. "We're really lucky to have them join us next season. We're pleased to add two really good students and hard-working guys with resumés like theirs. We're excited to have Christian and Yuya joining our program."
