Women’s Golf tied for second after round one at Big 12 Championship

Sophomore Sophia Schubert and junior Haley Mills finished the day in the top three.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Sophomore Sophia Schubert shot a first-round 70 to lead Texas Women's Golf to a tie for second after round one at the Big 12 Championship at The Dominion Country Club on Friday.

Schubert began the day shooting even par on the first 11 holes before making a bogey on hole 12. She was +1 through the first 14 holes before making birdies on 15, 16 and 18 to end the day 2-under par in second place, one stroke behind the leader.

It marks the 14^th round Schubert has shot at or under par in 28 rounds played this season.

Junior Haley Mills also finished in the top three for Texas after shooting a 1-under 71. She carded even par on the first two holes to start the day before making a birdie on hole three and a bogey on four to return to even par. She made back-to-back birdies on holes seven and eight to stand at 2-under entering the back nine. She made a bogey on 13 and stayed even throughout the rest of the back nine to end the day in a tie for third.

Junior Julia Beck posted another top-13 finish for the Longhorns at 1-over par. Beck started with three bogeys and one double bogey on the front nine, but rallied with five birdies to only one bogey on the back nine for a 73.

Senior Natalie Karcher rounded out the top 20 for the Longhorns with her first-round 74. Karcher made a bogey on the second hole, but fired back with back-to-back birdies on holes five and six. She made a double bogey on the ninth hole and a bogey on 11, but made even par through the rest of the round to finish 2-over par, in a tie for 19th.

Senior Tezira Abe finished 4-over par, carding one birdie, three bogeys and one double bogey to end the day in a tie for 33rd.

As a team, Texas carded a 2-under 288 to tie with Oklahoma State and sit one stroke behind leader Iowa State going into Saturday's second round.

Kansas State's Madison Talley leads all players at 3-under par.

The Longhorns will tee off with Iowa State and Oklahoma State beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
