Senior makes history at Texas Relays
AUSTIN, Texas – In her final Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in a Longhorn uniform, senior Morolake Akinosun had one big goal and she accomplished it. Akinosun blazed down the track in 11.07 seconds to win handily and become the only woman in Texas Relays history to win the 100 meters three consecutive years.
Akinosun's time also ranks her No. 1 in the world this year to date. The senior also was attempting to win four events at the meet after winning three last year. She came away with two.
Akinosun ran the third leg of the Longhorns' victorious 4x400 relay team that ran 3:26.54 to rank No. 1 in the NCAA this year in the first run of the top relay team this outdoor season. Akinosun and the women's 4x200 relay team took second place with a time of 1:32.60. Texas was one of the favorites to win the 4x100 relay heading into the final after running the No. 3 time in prelims at 44.45 seconds. The Longhorns finished eighth after one runner fell during the exchange on leg of the relay.
This is Akinosun's first Big 12 Athlete of the Week award this outdoor season and the third for the Longhorns after Ariel Jones won last week and Asa Garcia shared the award in Week 1. Akinosun has now tallied three Big 12 Athlete of the Week awards in her career individually and has another when UT's 4x400 relay team was recognized this year during indoor season.
Ronnie Baker of TCU was honored as the men's award winner this week by the Big 12 Conference.
