CLOVIS, Calif. – The second day of USATF Junior Championships saw nearly just as much success as the first for Texas Track & Field as an incoming freshman won her event and a rising sophomore posted two personal bests to keep the momentum going in Clovis, California.
Alexis Duncan posted one of the most impressive performances of the meet and biggest upsets all at the same time as she won the women's 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.04 seconds. The win solidifies her spot on Team USA for the IAAF World Junior Championships later this summer in Poland. It was an upset as she defeated a runner who set an American junior record and tied the world junior record during the prelims. Duncan ran 13.16 in the prelims.
"Alexis ran a very good race. The way she competed showed us that she can step right in and be a factor at the highest level," said Associate Head Coach Tonja Burford-Bailey. "She loves representing Team USA and to be able to do that on the junior level is a stepping stone to better things to come. Her future is very bright."
Duncan was not the only Longhorn in the final of the 100 meter hurdles. Rising sophomore Ashley Miller took fourth place with her time of 13.22 seconds and was just .01 away from bronze. During the preliminary heats, Miller posted a then-personal best of 13.25 seconds. She now ranks eighth in school history in the event.
Two more future Longhorns were in action in the distance events for Texas.
Destiny Collins closed the night with an impressive showing in the 3,000 meters. Up against some of the top talent in the nation, Collins proved why she was one of the most saught-after distance recruits in the nation with her third-place finish. She clocked in at 9:21.44 after setting the pace for much of the race.
Fellow incoming freshman Marissa Flournoy crossed the finish line in eighth place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. She finished in 10:48.68.
Flournoy got to run alongside a future teammate with rising sophomore Meghan Lloyd finishing right behind her in ninth place. Lloyd ran a personal best time 10:56.56 to now rank sixth in school history.
Also running for the Longhorns was rising sophomore Zola Golden. She finished 14th in the 400 meters with her time of 55.01.
Action will conclude at the USATF Junior Championships on Sunday. The Longhorns will have rising sophomore Asa Garcia competing in the triple jump and incoming freshman Elena Bruckner goes for her second title of the meet in the shot put. She won the discus on Friday night already with a throw that would have been good enough to break the school record.
