AUSTIN, Texas – Before the Olympic Games this summer in Rio de Janeiro, a handful of Longhorns will get a taste of international competition themselves at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Poland. Six Texas Longhorns are set to take on the best the world has to offer for athletes under the age of 20 with three representing Team USA and one competing for Canada.
Action begins Tuesday from Zawisza Stadium in Bydgoszcz, Poland, for six days of competition.
Four incoming freshman are set to represent their home countries. Team USA will have thrower Elena Bruckner competing in both the shot put and discus. Bruckner recently finished 16th in the discus at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Alexis Duncan will run the 100 meter hurdles wearing the Red, White and Blue after she won the event at USATF Junior Championships. Destiny Collins will run the 3,000 meters for Team USA after taking bronze in June. Long and triple jumper Obrien Wasome will compete for Jamaica rounding out the future Longhorns in Poland.
Two rising sophomores will also be in action.
Alex Rogers will run the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase after winning gold at the USATF meet. Hurdler Mariam Abdul-Rashid will represent Canada in the 100 and 400 meter hurdles. She took gold and silver in those events, respectively, at the Canadian Junior Championships. Abdul-Rashid also is listed in the relay pool for both of Canada's relay teams in Poland.
Fans can keep up with the action from Poland with live results provided at iaff.org. The IAAF will also be running a live blog and have radio broadcast during the meet on its website. Updates from the meet can be found on the IAAF's official Twitter account @iaaforg. Texas Track & Field will have updates on its athlete on its Twitter account as well, @utexastrack.
