Conger, Glass & Feigen post top-seven finishes at U.S. Olympic Trials
07.02.2016 | Men's Swimming and Diving
Rio-bound rising senior Jack Conger leads the Horns with his fourth-place showing in the 100 butterfly.
OMAHA, Neb. – Paced by Jack Conger's fourth-place showing in the 100m butterfly, current and former Texas swimmers accounted for three top-seven finishes Saturday on night seven of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials.
Conger clocked the No. 7 time in the world this year in the 100 butterfly final, as he placed fourth in 51.26, less than a tenth of a second from taking the second qualifying position for the Rio Olympics. UT rising senior Will Glass chopped nearly half of a second off of his lifetime best in the final and placed seventh at 52.25.
Defending Olympic champion Michael Phelps took the win in 51.00 while Tom Shields locked up the second berth for Rio at 51.20. Seth Stubblefield placed third at 51.24.
"I felt great going out," Conger said. "I really messed up my turn and glided on the exchange. I tried to pick it back up and I looked to see where everyone was around me. I kind of messed up my breathing pattern toward the end. It's not the finish I wanted, but I'm still going to Rio (for the 4x200m free relay). I'll take the punches and roll with them."
Former Longhorn Jimmy Feigen added a seventh-place mark of 21.99 in the 50 freestyle. Feigen likely will earn a bid to the U.S. Olympic Team on Sunday as a member of the 4x100m freestyle relay.
Earlier in the day, former Longhorn Michael McBroom and UT rising senior Clark Smith posted qualifying times for Sunday's finals of the 1500 freestyle. McBroom, a former NCAA champion in the 1,650-yard freestyle, qualified third at 15:07.42 while Smith qualified seventh at 15:17.08 (Smith later scratched from finals consideration).
The final session of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials gets underway Sunday at 7 p.m. CT. NBC will air live coverage of the finals, which includes the women's 50 freestyle and the men's 1500 freestyle.
