Hossler declares professional status
07.08.2016 | Men's Golf
Junior Beau Hossler will forego his senior year to play golf professionally.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas golfer Beau Hossler has elected to forego his remaining eligibility and declare his professional status, the three-time All-American announced on Friday.
Currently ranked No. 1 in Golfweek's Men's Amateur Rankings and a three-time All-American, Hossler's decision to turn professional follows an epic junior year, where he captured five collegiate victories and the Jones Cup Invitational.
His five collegiate wins were the third-most in a season, following only in Longhorn Ben Crenshaw's seven in 1973 and six in 1972. Hossler became the only player in Texas history to be named Big 12 Player of the Year on multiple occasions and is the fifth in Texas history to earn two First Team All-America honors.
Hossler, 21, has already competed in six United States Amateur Championships and three United States Opens. Following rehabilitation from a shoulder injury suffered at the 2016 NCAA Championship, he will seek sponsor exemptions from 2017
Hossler joins the ranks of legendary Texas Men's Golf team members that have seen professional golf success, including Jordan Spieth, Jhonattan Vegas, Harrison Frazar, Bob Estes, Tom Kite, Justin Leonard and Ben Crenshaw.
STATEMENT FROM BEAU HOSSLER
"After months of weighing options and discussing with my loved ones, I have decided to turn professional and forego my senior year at the University of Texas. I have been preparing to become a professional golfer and have dreamed of this day for more than 10 years. I am blessed to have surrounded myself with some of the greatest people in the world. Without each one of their contributions, I would not be in this position today.
If I told you about all my experiences at the University of Texas, it would take about a month. My teammates during these three years are some of the most special golfers I have seen, but more importantly, they are some of the highest character people I have been around. Their playing records speak for themselves as golfers, but the most impressive parts are those that you don't see on paper. Coach Fields has been an incredible asset in my life the past three and a half years, since I stepped on campus. He has treated me and my teammates like his own sons and cares about our careers at and after Texas.
I am looking forward to my future in golf. I cannot wait to hit the ground running and getting back to 100 percent health. I miss the competition and am doing everything I can to be back as quickly as possible."
TEXAS MEN'S GOLF HEAD COACH JOHN FIELDS
"We are so happy that Beau is taking the next step and giving himself the opportunity to play at the next level. I have no doubt that he will go out and accomplish his goals at the next level. He had three and a half amazing years at the University of Texas and finished his collegiate golf career at a high status. We are extremely excited about his next step and his future as a professional golfer and will always be proud to call him a Texas Golf alumnus."
