Five Longhorns men's swimmers set for Rio Olympics
08.01.2016 | Men's Swimming and Diving
Four current Longhorns plus former Longhorn Jimmy Feigen make their way to Brazil for the Rio Olympics.
RIO DE JANEIRO – Current Longhorns Townley Haas, Joseph Schooling, Jack Conger and Clark Smith plus former Longhorn Jimmy Feigen open competition next week at the 2016 Olympic Games.
Texas head coach Eddie Reese also makes the trip to Brazil as a coach for Singapore, for whom Schooling will compete. Haas, Conger, Smith and Feigen will represent Team USA next week in Rio de Janeiro.
Haas punched his ticket to Rio by winning the 200m freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials earlier this summer in Omaha, Nebraska. His victory awarded him one of two American berths to compete in the 200m freestyle in Rio, and it gave him a spot in the U.S. pool for the 4x200m freestyle relay.
Conger and Smith placed third and sixth, respectively, in the same 200m freestyle race in Omaha and will be in the mix to swim the 4x200m freestyle relay with Haas. The Rio Games will mark the eighth straight Olympiad that Texas has sent at least one current or former Longhorn to represent the United States in the 4x200m freestyle relay.
Schooling, a bronze medalist in the 100m butterfly for Singapore at the 2015 FINA World Championships, will swim in a second consecutive Olympic Games. Schooling, who has swept the NCAA titles in the 100 and 200 butterfly events in his two seasons at Texas, will swim the 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle in Rio.
Feigen, who won silver as a member of the USA's 4x100m freestyle relay at the London Olympics, has positioned himself to swim the same event in Rio by way of his fifth-place finish in the 100m freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Thirty-nine former Longhorns swimmers and divers have accounted for 67 medals – 42 gold, 16 silver and nine bronze – at the Olympics. In 2012, Brendan Hansen won gold for the U.S. in the 4x100m medley relay and bronze in the 100m breaststroke.
Ricky Berens won his second consecutive gold medal as a member of the USA's 4x200m freestyle relay, and he joined Feigen to win silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay. Former Texas diver Troy Dumais won bronze for the U.S. in synchronized three-meter diving.
NBC will stream all swimming events at nbcolympics.com/video/swimming and televise finals live starting with the finals on Aug. 6.
