Olivia Brook tallies a brace and Katie Glenn adds a goal as Texas outshoots the Islanders, 21-3
AUSTIN, Texas – Led by a brace (two goals) from junior forward Olivia Brook and a score from sophomore midfielder Katie Glenn, Texas soccer rolled past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Friday night exhibition action at Mike A. Myers Stadium, 3-0.
The Longhorns out-shot the Islanders by a commanding 21-3 total, including 15-1 over the opening 45 minutes, managed a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal and led 11-0 in corner kicks.
The Burnt Orange & White took control of the night's proceedings right from the opening kick-off, controlling the run of play throughout the contest.
Off a corner kick in the sixth minute, the Horns managed a trio of shots, the best coming off the foot of redshirt sophomore forward Mikayla Flores. The La Verne, Calif., native received a ball on the left side of the box, turned quickly and fired towards the left upright forcing a quick save from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi keeper Jordan Wainwright.
The heavy pressure finally paid dividends at the 13:36 mark of the opening frame. A feed up the middle by Flores found the feet of Glenn inside the middle of the 18. The Round Rock, Texas, product pivoted to her right and fired a shot into the lower left corner of the twine for a 1-0 advantage.
The Islanders didn't manage any real possession on the ball until approximately 20 minutes into the match and couldn't manage to register any shots.
Meanwhile, the UT shooting gallery continued as Brook forced a save on a near bicycle kick at 23:56. Sophomore midfielder Nakia Graham also came close to doubling the lead as her drive from just inside the top of the 18 was saved off the line by the Texas A&M-CC defense.
Finally, with just 9:04 left on the opening half clock, Brook struck for her first goal on a shot from the right side of the box to make it 2-0.
The lead nearly became three scores at 42:21 as an ambitious try from 45 yards out by senior midfielder Julia Dyche traveled just a foot over the bar.
With 1:17 left in the stanza, the Islanders finally got their first shot on the board as a lengthy try by Kaitlyn Joy was smothered by Texas keeper Cara Connatser just wide of the left post.
Right out of the halftime break, it was more of the same as Texas sophomore forward Alexa Adams was played into space inside the 18 and made a quick move to the right around the keeper. Unfortunately, her final touch betrayed her as the ball escaped harmlessly over the end line.
The best scoring opportunity of the match for the Islanders came at 54:05 as a turnover near midfield was corralled by Texas A&M-CC's Emma Biba. She moved up field and fed a ball to the left side to Shayla Spearman in some space inside the 18. The eventual shot traveled through traffic, but was easily caught on the fly by UT substitute keeper Taylor Braun for the Longhorns' only save of the contest.
Just 1:34 later, Texas put the match out of reach as a ball pinging around in a crowd inside the box ended up at Brook's feet. From approximately seven yards out in the middle, the Houston, Texas, native calmly drove the ball into the back of the net, expanding the advantage to 3-0.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi registered its final shot at the 72:15 mark as Spearman fired a drive from a tough angle that was headed wide left before being smothered by UT's third net minder of the night, senior Paige Brown.
From there, a trio of corner kicks and a pair of shots from senior forward Jasmine Hart, one of which forced a stop, helped kill the remaining time as Texas secured a three-goal triumph.
The Longhorns will christen the 2016 regular season on Fri., Aug. 19, at Mike A. Myers Stadium by hosting Seattle at 7 p.m. CT. The contest will also be shown live on Longhorn Network.
Texas Soccer Post-Match Quotes
Head Coach Angela Kelly
On the team's overall performance: For being nine days in, I thought we were pretty advanced in the types of layers that we were able to already install. We had great shape, we had a good majority of the possession, we had some great dynamic movements and just need to finish, obviously, a few more of our clear chances, but great performances. Olivia with two goals, Katie's goal was a great finish. And then there were other great things. Emma Jett, Monique [Iannella], lots of the newcomers had great performances, so I'm just really excited about this season.
On what the team will be working on this week: I think just fine-tuning different things. I think we left part of it out there. We're going to be better organized in attacking the box, the attacking third and just playing within our possessions.
Junior Forward Olivia Brook
On scoring two goals on the night: That felt great of course, but I just think that we came together as a team really well tonight. I know that we've put in a lot of work. We've been working our butts off for the last couple of weeks, and it all came together tonight really well.
On finally having competition from another team: I mean, we're pretty competitive. We get to it in practice, and we really set ourselves up for success. So when we come out here, we're more than prepared.
On her goals for this season: I'm hoping to just personally go out there and help in every way that I possibly can, and I think that there are really great things ahead for this team this year. We're looking really good.
