Former Longhorn Miguel Reyes Varela and doubles partner Santiago Gonzalez fall in straight sets to Romania.
RIO DE JANEIRO – Texas-Ex Miguel Reyes Varela and doubles partner Santiago Gonzalez took on their second doubles match for Mexico but were unable to stave off elimination from the competition Monday at the 2016 Olympic Games.
Reyes Varela and Gonzalez challenged the fifth-seeded Romanian tandem of Florin Mergea and Horia Tecau, but Romania emerged with a 6-3, 7-6 (9) victory.
On Saturday, Reyes Varela became the first Longhorns tennis player to win a match an Olympic Games when he and Gonzalez knocked off Colin Fleming and Dominic Inglot of Great Britain in the first round of doubles.
