BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of Texas' first road test of the season resulted in a wild shootout, as the No. 11 Longhorns (2-1) fell to California (2-1) on Saturday night, 50-43.
The Golden Bears got on the board first, driving down the field to take a 7-0 lead in the opening minutes. The Texas offense, led by freshman quarterback Shane Buechele, responded with a quick drive of their own against the Cal defense for 53 yards.
With the Longhorns 16 yards away from the end zone, Tyrone Swoopes entered the game to begin a night of bruising running attacks for Texas. Running back Chris Warren III steamrolled several Cal defenders on his way to the end zone, putting Texas on the board and evening the score at seven apiece.
On the ensuing Cal possession, Texas stuffed the Golden Bears on fourth-and-one to take over at the 34-yard line. Kicker Trent Domingue took advantage of the excellent field position to nail a field goal from 38 yards out, putting Texas ahead 10-7.
Swoopes re-entered the game on the next Texas possession to replace Buechele. The Cal defense did not have an early answer for Warren III, who capped off the drive by muscling for 12 yards and a touchdown.
The Golden Bears scored another rushing touchdown in the final minute of the first quarter to pull within three.
Brothers Armanti and D'Onta Foreman combined for a one-two punch to open the second quarter for Texas. Armanti kicked off the action with a 34-yard reception from Swoopes, putting the Longhorns within 11 yards of a touchdown. On the next play, D'Onta thundered into the left side of the end zone to finish the job and put the Longhorns up 24-14.
The two teams traded touchdowns in the next minutes, with Buechele finding receiver Jacorey Warrick in the end zone on a 41-yard touchdown pass. The Golden Bears countered with yet another touchdown, making the score 31-28, with Texas holding onto the lead.
Safety Brandon Jones blocked his second punt of the season at the Cal 19-yard line, knocking the ball out of the end zone for a safety. The celebration was short-lived, however, as Cal quarterback Davis Webb connected with favorite target Chad Hansen to give the Golden Bears their first lead of the game, 35-33. The scoreboard remained unchanged going into halftime.
Both offenses were quiet in the third quarter, with neither team finding a way to put up points.
Texas wasted no time scoring in the fourth quarter. D'Onta Foreman seized on a large gap in the middle of the field to take it to the house, recapturing the lead for Texas.
The points continued to stack up in the game, as Cal scored a touchdown for the lead. The Golden Bears dealt an additional blow with a two-point conversion, making it a three-point game at 43-40.
Texas evened the score with a field goal from Trent Domingue, but another pass from Webb to Hansen resulted in a touchdown. Down 50-43 with 3:34 left in the game, Texas was unable to find an answer on offense, and the Golden Bears took a knee in the final minute to seal the win.
Texas will have a bye week before they head out on the road again, this time to open up Big 12 Conference play against Oklahoma State in Stillwater.
