STILLWATER, Okla. - A 49-31 shootout on Saturday snapped Texas' eight game winning streak in Stillwater, as the Longhorns (2-2, 0-1) fell to the Oklahoma State Cowboys (3-2, 1-1) in their first Big 12 contest of the year.
The defeat marks the first road loss against the Cowboys since 1997.
Freshman quarterback Shane Buechele threw for 239 yards, going 21-of-33 on the day. Running backs Chris Warren III and D'Onta Foreman each registered over 100 yards on the ground, rushing for 106 and 148 yards, respectively.
On an afternoon replete with scoring drives, Oklahoma State got on the board first with a 30-yard rush to the end zone in the opening minutes. After Texas came up on short on a third down-and-two in their first possession, Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph connected with wide receiver James Washington to extend the lead to 14-0.
Texas wasted no time in responding, making quick work of the Cowboy defense en route to their first score of the game. Quarterback Shane Buechele launched a 49-yard pass to Dorian Leonard to position the Longhorns at the Oklahoma State two-yard line. On the next play, quarterback Tyrone Swoopes found an opening in the right corner of the end zone to put the Longhorns on the board.
On Texas' next possession, running back D'Onta Foreman broke free for 22 yards and another touchdown, seemingly evening the score at 14 apiece. However, the Cowboys blocked the extra point attempt and returned it for two points, lengthening their advantage over the Longhorns to 16-13.
The Longhorns continued to rely on a punishing ground attack to move into Oklahoma State territory on their ensuing possession. Facing a second down-and-nine from the Oklahoma State 12-yard line, Tyrone Swoopes churned for the remaining yardage and Texas' third touchdown of the day. The special teams drama continued, however, and the Cowboys stuffed another extra point attempt to leave the score at 19-16, Texas.
Both teams traded touchdowns in their next possessions. After the Cowboys took the lead at 23-19, Buechele fired a short pass to tight end Andrew Beck, who extended the play for a 39-yard charge to the end zone and a 25-23 Longhorn lead. The scoreboard remained unchanged as the Cowboys blocked their third extra point of the afternoon.
Oklahoma State found the end zone two more times before the clock expired, taking a 37-25 lead into the locker room.
Another Cowboy touchdown in the third quarter extended the Longhorn deficit to 43-25. The Longhorns proved that no special teams squad was safe, however, as defensive tackle Poona Ford blocked the Cowboys' extra point attempt.
On Texas' next drive, D'Onta Foreman exploded for a 62-yard touchdown rush, pulling the Longhorns to within 12. The Longhorn offense remained quiet for the rest of the game, and the Cowboys tacked on two more field goals for a final score of 49-31.
The Longhorns will continue conference play next Saturday in Dallas, where they will face off against the rival Oklahoma Sooners in the annual Red River Showdown at the Cotton Bowl. The game will be broadcast at 11 a.m. CT on Fox Sports 1.
