AUSTIN, Texas – For scoring her first career goal on Sunday to help hand UCSB its initial defeat of 2016, Texas soccer forward Tecora Turner has been selected as the Big 12 Conference's Freshman of the Week.
The Longhorns have now secured two of the last three league rookie accolades after forward Kyra Falcone earned a Big 12 Freshman of the Week plaudit back on Sept. 6.
Turner played only 21 minutes as a sub off the bench against the unbeaten Gauchos, but made those minutes count by scoring the match-winning goal at the 64:35 mark. With the contest dead-locked at 1-1, the Memphis, Tenn., product received a pass from sophomore teammate Alexa Adams and made a great individual effort, battling her way through three UCSB defenders before scoring from 10 yards out on the left wing. Gaucho net minder Brittney Rogers had entered Sunday's match against the Burnt Orange & White with a miniscule 0.15 goals-against-average, having allowed just one goal over 600 minutes of playing time, before Turner and fellow freshman forward Cyera Hintzen tickled the twine in the win.
Texas soccer (6-3-0) heads out on the road this weekend, opening Big 12 Conference play with trips to face Baylor (Fri., Sept. 23, 6 p.m. CT, FOX Sports Plus) and Oklahoma (Sun., Sept. 25, 1 p.m. CT, FOX Sports Oklahoma, FOX College Sports Central, FOX Sports Go).
