Sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Curry posts her 10th solo shutout to set a new Texas single-season record
WACO, Texas – Lightning struck again in overtime for No. 10 Texas soccer (13-1-2, 5-1-2 Big 12 Conference) on Friday night at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field, as junior midfielder Katie Glenn's "golden goal" at 96:29 powered the Longhorns past Baylor (10-4-2, 4-3-1 Big 12 Conference), 1-0 (OT).
Texas improved to a staggering 5-0-2 in overtime this year and 11-1-0 in one-goal contests. With their fifth OT victory, the Burnt Orange & White also equaled the 2004 Longhorns for the most extra-session triumphs in a single season.
With her 10th solo shutout of 2017, UT sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Curry established a new single-season shutout mark, eclipsing the old record of nine blankings held by former Longhorns netminders Abby Smith (2014) and Dianna Pfenninger (2008).
For Glenn the goal marked her fourth of the campaign and third match-winner, while redshirt sophomore forward Mikayla Flores and freshman midfielder Emily Strouphauer were credited with their fourth and third assists of the year, respectively.
"I saw Mikayla get the ball out wide and knew I had to get myself in," Glenn said. "Cyera (Hintzen) took her players front post, so I knew I needed to go back post and get (a shot) on frame. Everyone (on our team) fights the entire match. No one ever gives up. No matter who comes in, they compete well. We all just want to win, so it's a team effort."
"I'm really proud of the squad," Texas head coach Angela Kelly said. "That's a resilient effort (tonight). We certainly didn't have our best night of soccer. To figure out a way to pull that one out, as young as we are, we just figure out ways to win. Emily made an incredible difference when she was in the game.
"I think it's really important that we're teaching and figuring out ways to win. Winning's a habit. It's really, really important for every member of our squad to understand how to win. In this conference, there are so many talented teams. It's becoming more and more difficult to steal points on the road. Baylor battled tonight. They really came at us, so a credit to them. They really worked hard. Obviously, we're excited that we came out with a win."
Despite possession by both teams over the opening few minutes, neither squad was able to manage a shot until Baylor forward Camryn Wendlandt and midfielder Aline De Lima each shot wide left from distance at 7:58 and 8:26, respectively.
The Bears had a dangerous opportunity off a corner during the 13th minute as the pass was eventually delivered in towards the top of the 18. A quick touch ahead found defender Sarah King in space just 10 yards out, but with her back to the goal. The BU defender pivoted around and fired a quick side-footed volley, but the shot proved right to Curry for an easy save.
Texas finally started settling into the match during the 22nd minute with its strongest foray to that point into Baylor's defensive end.
Following another Curry stop on a long BU attempt, the Burnt Orange & White got their first shot of the night at 26:06 as sophomore forward Cyera Hintzen fired a ball from the left wing into the side netting.
A Baylor foul set the Horns up with a great chance off a free kick during the 32nd minute. On a pass into the 18 by sophomore defender Emma Jett, the ball ricocheted around in the crowd before bouncing out to the feet of junior midfielder Kayra Dollas. The Orange, Calif., native attempted a quick 20-yard shot, but watched it sail high over the bar.
Texas' offense continued to up its pressure over the next few minutes as Hintzen launched a 15-yard lazer from the left wing just wide right at 34:04.
The Longhorns had a terrific chance off a free kick just outside the top of the 18 during the 41st minute. Hintzen stepped up and drilled in a left-footed shot, but the Garland, Texas, native's bent effort ventured straight to BU keeper Jennifer Wandt for a routine save.
The Bears closed the half with a flourish as midfielder Julie James had a shot deflected away in the goal mouth at 44:17 before Lauren Piercy fired high from 18 yards at 44:46.
Out of the halftime break, despite solid UT pressure early, it was Baylor that missed an incredible opportunity at 48:35. Off a Texas turnover, the Bears managed a quick 2-on-1 break with a pass out to the left locating Kennedy Brown in space. The BU forward tried to beat Curry into the right upper 90 only to drive her shot a couple of feet over the cross bar.
Texas managed another spell of pressure during the 63rd minute as Glenn made a quick turn and launched a shot from 25 yards out that went wide right.
Baylor was back at it at 65:12 as a quick assault ended in a 12-yard Piercy shot that rose just up and over the woodwork.
Great work from Strouphauer created a Longhorns chance during the 69th minute as an eventual 22-yard Hintzen effort traveled over the bar.
Redshirt freshman forward Cydney Billups nearly got on the end of a great through ball for Texas during the 76th minute, but the feed proved just a couple of feet too far as Wandt raced off her line to cover.
UT earned a corner at 81:38, but the eventual delivery into the middle of the 18 proved just a foot too high to locate the head of a leaping Dollas.
Jett put a charge into a free kick for the Longhorns at 82:53, drilling a 38-yard effort just over the top of frame for a goal kick.
The Bears put together a late spell of pressure in regulation with forward Raegan Padgett forcing another Curry stop from nine yards out at 86:22.
On a high pass over the top, Hintzen had a final chance on a header at 87:19, but her effort from 12 yards out bounced in harmlessly to Wendt as the teams required extra time to settle things.
It was Baylor with the first scoring opportunity of the opening OT as James had a dangerous shot blocked from eight yards out at 92:45.
The end would come suddenly at 96:29 as a ball up the right wing from Strouphauer located Flores. The La Verne, Calif., native dribbled towards the end line and launched a cross towards the back post right to an on-rushing Glenn who finished the "golden goal" from seven yards out to complete UT's 1-0 (OT) triumph.
