AUSTIN, Texas – No. 9 Texas posted the nation's top time and landed the top-two spots in the final 800 freestyle relay standings as the Longhorns kicked off the annual Texas Invitational Wednesday evening.
Texas, the nation's most dominant program in the 800 freestyle relay, ran away to victory against a strong field, as senior Jonathan Roberts, junior Jeff Newkirk, senior Joseph Schooling and junior Townley Haas were victorious in 6 minutes, 14.62 seconds, good for the No. 7 time in school history.
Roberts led off in 1:35.29 before Newkirk split 1:33.60 on the second leg. Schooling picked up the relay's third leg in 1:33.17, and Haas anchored in 1:32.56. Notably, the Longhorns' "B" relay featuring freshmen JohnThomas Larson and Austin Katz, sophomore Jacob Huerta and sophomore Sam Kline took second at 6:19.44, a fraction of a second ahead of strong relays from Arizona State, Stanford and Arizona.
The Longhorns open day two of the Texas Invitational on Thursday with the preliminary round at 10 a.m. CT. Finals are set for 6 p.m.
