AUSTIN, Texas – Senior Brooke McCarty moved to fourth on the all-time three pointers made list (195), passing current assistant coach Jamie Carey, as No. 2 Texas Women's Basketball (6-0) defeated Louisiana Tech (4-3), 88-54, at the Frank Erwin Center Thursday night.
McCarty posted a career high of five steals, while dishing out five assists. She also led all scorers with 15 points, on 6-of-10 shooting and a 3-of-5 clip from beyond the arc.
Junior Lashann Higgs, sophomore Sug Sutton and junior Olamide Aborowa joined McCarty in the double-figure ranks. Higgs contributed 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting as well as three rebounds and four assists. Sutton and Aborowa also provided a spark off the bench, registering 10 and 11 points, respectively, and combining for 12 rebounds.
Senior Ariel Atkins dished out a team-high seven assists to complement her eight points and three rebounds. As a team, Texas shot 47 percent (37-of-79) from the field as well as 41 percent (9-of-22) from three-point range.
The Texas defense turned over the Lady Techsters early and often, accounting for 29 points off of 22 turnovers. The Longhorns' stingy defense also held Louisiana Tech to just 33 percent (20-of-61) shooting from the field.
McCarty got the Longhorns in the scoring column with a running floater to start the game. Louisiana Tech started off strong and only trailed 6-4 early in the first quarter, but Texas opened up a 14-0 run over the next three minutes and did not look back the rest of the game.
Louisiana Tech went on a mini-run during the last five minutes before the half, hitting 5-of-7 field goals. Despite a three-minute scoring dry spell for the Longhorns leading up to the half, Texas headed into the locker room with a 50-26 lead.
McCarty continued her strong performance by draining another three from the corner to start the second half. In the final half, the Longhorns stifled the Lady Techsters' offense, forcing two separate scoring droughts that would last over three minutes during the third quarter and fourth quarter.
Next up, Texas will travel to Athens, Ga., on Sunday, Dec. 3, to play the Georgia Lady Bulldogs as a part of the Big 12/SEC Challenge. Tip-off will be at 3 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on SEC Network. The game will also be broadcast on 105.3 FM in Austin or at texassports.com/audio.
