AUSTIN, Texas – Texas freshman Austin Katz became the second-fastest Longhorn in the 200-yard backstroke, and UT claimed the 400 freestyle relay as the Longhorns closed out a successful stint Saturday night at the annual four-day Texas Invitational.
Freshman Chris Yeager opened the night with a sixth-place swim in the 1,650-yard freestyle final heat. He clocked 14 minutes, 59.97 seconds, good for an NCAA "B" cut and ninth place in the final standings.
Katz became the second-fastest Longhorn ever in the 200 backstroke and won the event at 1:38.49, a personal best. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Harty followed in third at 1:39.23, and senior Jonathan Roberts took fifth at 1:41.14. Junior Jeff Newkirk took seventh at 1:42.19. In the event's consolation final, sophomore Josh Artmann was victorious in a personal best of 1:41.16, while All-America junior John Shebat took second at 1:41.52.
Senior Brett Ringgold led the Horns in the 100 freestyle final with his second-place swim of 42.13. Junior Tate Jackson added a fifth-place mark of 42.80. All-America junior Townley Haas won the consolation final at 42.81.
Former Longhorn Will Licon, who closed his Texas career with three consecutive NCAA titles in the 200 breaststroke, won the same event in 1:51.99. UT senior Jared Butler won the event's consolation final at 1:56.37 while junior Sam Stewart took second at 1:56.76. Junior Casey Melzer took third at 1:57.05.
The 200 butterfly championship final featured a loaded field that included the likes of American record holder Jack Conger and Joseph Schooling, the 2016 Olympic gold medalist in the 100m butterfly for Singapore. Conger was victorious in 1:39.56 while Schooling produced an NCAA automatic-qualifying cut in 1:40.72. Freshman Sam Pomajevich trimmed about a second off of his lifetime best and went 1:40.82 for fourth place and an NCAA "A" cut. Junior Max Holter took sixth in 1:44.04.
Texas wrapped the evening by posting the nation's No. 2 time on its way to victory in the 400 freestyle relay at 2:49.80, an NCAA "A" cut.
