NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Sophomore Alex Rogers posted a victory for the Texas Longhorns in the mile on Saturday afternoon at the Alex Wilson Invitational to set the tone for the distance group heading into next week's Big 12 Championship.
Rogers crossed the finish line with a new personal record time of 4:02.54 to win by just under half a second.
"Alex had a good day with a PR indoors," Assistant Coach Brad Herbster said. "He just missed cracking the all-time top 10 list at Texas and is running well heading into the Big 12 Championship next week."
Texas sent a small group of distance runners to the meet this week hoping to run fast times to possibly qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Senior Mary Beth Hamilton was looking to improve on her school record from last week in the mile. She was unable to repeat that showing but did finish in eighth place with a strong time of 4:44.15. Freshman Abby Guidry finished in 17th.
"The women's mile was a great race that was set up really well, but unfortunately, Mary Beth was inside the group a bit too long. I think that just took its toll on her late when she tried to make her push."
Texas will now turn its attention to the conference championship meet, which is set to run next week for two days from Ames, Iowa. The women are looking to win their fourth consecutive conference title while the men hope to avenge a 1.5-point loss from last year to Oklahoma State.
