Longhorns learn their NCAA road during the NCAA Selection Show on Sun., May 14, at 9 p.m. CT on ESPN2
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – On Saturday afternoon at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium, two Baylor pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout as the No. 16/12 Lady Bears (43-12) blanked the Longhorns (31-24) in the Big 12 Tournament's third-place game, 7-0.
The Burnt Orange & White now wait to learn what NCAA Tournament road they will travel during Sunday night's "NCAA Division I Softball Selection Show" at 9 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
Redshirt sophomore Erica Wright (7-7) took the loss for the Horns from the circle, allowing one earned run on a single hit with three walks and two strikeouts over 3.1 frames.
At the plate, Texas got single base hits from both senior designated player Mickenzi Krpec and senior shortstop Devon Tunning.
It was Baylor's offense that put together the game's initial threat during the first, putting two aboard with one out on a Kyla Walker single to center and an Ari Hawkins hit-by-pitch. Wright responded to the situation with a big strikeout of BU first baseman Shelby Friudenberg to get closer to escaping the jam. Baylor designated player Shelby McGlaun stepped to the dish and hit a hot shot into the hole between third and short. Senior third baseman Celina Felix dove to her left to make a great grab, leapt to her feet and tagged Walker to end the frame.
Tunning became Texas' first base runner of the contest, leading off the top of the fourth, as the Montgomery, Texas, product ripped the initial pitch of the frame to right center for a single. A perfect Jade Gortarez sacrifice bunt advanced the runner into scoring position, but a fly ball to center and a foul out near the Baylor dugout left Tunning stranded.
The Lady Bears finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth as a McGlaun walk and a Jessie Scroggins bloop single to left got BU in business with a pair on and one out. Right fielder Maddison Kettler put Baylor on the board by lacing a RBI single down the right field line to make it 1-0. With starting pitcher Gia Rodoni at the plate, Kettler took off for second and the throw on the steal attempt escaped into center allowing Scroggins the opportunity to cross with run number two. With the bases loaded and two outs, left fielder Kyla Walker laced a three-run double down the right field line to make it 5-0. A nice relay from sophomore right fielder Bekah Alcozer to Gortarez to Felix cut down Walker for the final out but not before the damage was done.
After the Longhorns left Krpec stranded at first on a lead-off single in the top of the fifth, the Lady Bears added two more during the bottom half on McGlaun's two-run HR to center to take a 7-0 lead.
From there, Baylor ace Kelsee Selman was brought in from the bullpen and retired the last six Longhorns in order over the final two frames to complete the shutout victory.
