Olympic gold medalist Adolph Kiefer passes at age 98

Adolph Kiefer, who won Olympic gold for the United States in 1936 before swimming at Texas, passed away Friday (May 5) at the age of 98.
AUSTIN, Texas – Adolph Kiefer, who won Olympic gold for the United States before swimming for The University of Texas, passed away Friday (May 5) at the age of 98.
Kiefer set Olympic and world records on his way to a gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke at the 1936 Summer Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany. In high school, Kiefer became the first man to break the one-minute mark in the 100-yard backstroke.
Kiefer later joined the Longhorns to swim under legendary head coach Tex Robertson and helped Texas to the 1939 Southwest Conference title.
A member of the inaugural class of the International Swimming Hall of Fame (1965), Kiefer was inducted into the UT Athletics Men's Hall of Honor in 1982.
