AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Longhorns will take to the track in California and Jamaica this week trying to qualify for the IAAF World Championships and Pan American Junior Championships for their respective nations. The track & field world will have its eyes set on the USATF Championships and Jamaican National Senior Championships with spots on the national teams on the line. The USATF Junior Championships also will be held in conjunction with the USATF Championships.
Action at the USATF Championships begins Thursday and runs through Sunday in Sacramento, California, at Hornet Stadium. A combination of nearly two dozen current and former Longhorns will look to finish in the top three and qualify for Team USA and compete at the IAAF World Championships this summer in London.
In Jamaica a handful of Longhorns hopes to wear the yellow, black and green of their home country at the world championships after this week's national meet in Kingston at National Stadium.
The USATF Junior Championships will serve as the qualifier meet for the Pan American Junior Championships to be held in July from Lima, Peru, with two spots available per event.
Action from the USATF Championships will be broadcast by NBC on a number of platforms. Thursday and Friday action will be provided by NBC Sports Gold, an online subscription option with exclusive track & field coverage. NBC Sports Network will have some live coverage on TV on Friday as well. NBC Sports Gold will again have live online action on Saturday and Sunday with NBC providing the live TV options. The Longhorns also are expected to have some athletes competing at the Canadian Track & Field Championships to be held in Ottawa in two weeks.
The IAAF World Championships will be held at London Stadium, home to the 2012 Olympic Games, in August. Texas Head Coach Mario Sategna will serve as the men's head coach for Team USA in London this summer.
