Texas-Ex Jack Conger earns World Championships berth with his 200m butterfly win while rising junior Townley Haas earns a spot on Team USA’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
INDIANAPOLIS – Texas-Ex Jack Conger won the 200-meter butterfly while Texas rising junior Townley Haas took third in the 100m freestyle, as the Rio Olympics gold medalists secured berths for next month's World Championships Tuesday evening at the USA Swimming National Championships.
Conger's win earned him an automatic placing on the U.S. roster for the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, while Haas' third-place showing in the 100m freestyle gives him a spot on Team USA's 4x100m freestyle relay in Budapest.
Conger, who set NCAA, American and U.S. Open records in the same event at the same pool three months ago, led from start to finish in the 200m butterfly championship final. Conger touched at the 150m mark in 1 minute, 24.54 seconds and held off a trio of Georgia Bulldogs for the win at 1:54.47.
Conger earns his first individual berth at a senior-level international meet (World Championships or Olympics). He joined Haas to win gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay with Team USA at the 2016 Olympic Games.
Haas showed off his exceptional freestyle range in the 100m freestyle championship final. A former NCAA champion in the 500-yard freestyle and the two-time defending NCAA champion and American record holder in the 200-yard freestyle, Haas challenged his Olympics teammates Nathan Adrian and Caeleb Dressel for the win and took third at 48.20 seconds. Haas joins Adrian, Dressel and Zach Apple in the Team USA 4x100m freestyle relay group for the World Championships.
Rising junior Remedy Rule led the Texas women with her eighth-place finish in the 200m butterfly championship final at 2:10.48. Rising sophomore Lauren Case took fifth in the event's consolation final at 2:11.83. Rising senior Rebecca Millard added a sixth-place time of 55.33 in the 100m freestyle consolation final.
