Wasik to compete in Thorpe Cup with Team USA

AUSTIN, Texas – Big 12 champion and all-American Steele Wasik is headed to Germany this week to compete for Team USA in the 24^th Thorpe Cup. The annual competition is set up as a team combined events meet of USA vs. Germany in the decathlon and heptathlon.

This year's Thorpe Cup runs July 29-30 from Dusseldorf, Germany, with Wasik joining six other Americans in the decathlon competition against Germany. Seven women will also compete for each nation in the heptathlon.

The Thorpe Cup was founded in 1993 by German coach Claus Marek and USA coach Harry Mara, two highly-respected coaches in the decathlon. The meet has had various other names over the years prior to the adoption of the official name Thorpe Cup in 2007. It is named after Jim Thorpe, the first Olympic champion in the decathlon.

The format takes seven athletes in the combined events and takes the point totals from the top five athletes on each side to create a team total. Team USA has won 13 times in the decathlon and claimed nine of the 11 titles in the women's heptathlon since its addition to the meet in 2006.

Wasik has a personal best score of 7,715 points in the decathlon from his dominating performance at the Big 12 Championship in May. He finished 10^th at the NCAA Championships with a total of 7,642 points. His score from Big 12s ranks him fifth on the team heading into Thorpe Cup.

Lifetime Longhorn Trey Hardee also is expected to compete at Thorpe Cup for training purposes as he prepares for the IAAF World Championships in two weeks. He will not be an official member of Team USA for this meet.
