FLORENCE, Italy – The Texas women's basketball team is slated to play its second of three games on Wednesday as part of a 10-day international trip to Italy. The Longhorns will face FSG Academy, a preparatory school and club team based in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands. Tip-off is slated for 11:30 a.m. CT at the Sandro Pertini Sport Center in Ponte Buggianese, Italy.
Texas (0-1 on Italy tour) is coming off a 52-50 overtime loss to TK Hannover, a member of the Damen-Basketball-Bundesliga League in Germany, on Monday. The Longhorns overcame a 10-point second-half deficit to force overtime before falling in the extra period. Junior post Jatarie White notched a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while sophomore guard Alecia Sutton tallied 13 points, four rebounds and four assists.
"We'll talk about execution offensively and just patience more than anything," Texas head coach Karen Aston said. "I think we would have executed better had we been more patient, made a few more passes, thrown the ball inside a little bit more, and been at the right place at the right time. I think that's one thing we'll work on. I didn't think our defense was bad. Really, based on practices, I expected that to be the problem, and really it was our offensive execution."
The Longhorns made their third consecutive NCAA Sweet 16 appearance a year ago and posted a 25-9 overall record. Texas has advanced to three Sweet 16s in a row for the first time since 2002-04.
Senior guard Ariel Atkins did not make the trip to Italy with the Longhorns. She was one of 12 players nationally to be selected for the USA Basketball U23 National Team. On Tuesday, she helped the USA Basketball U23 Team claim the inaugural Four Nations Tournament in Tokyo, Japan. Atkins will join the Longhorns later this week, but will not play in Italy.
Texas has sent a nation-leading four players to participate on USA Basketball teams this summer. In addition to Atkins, freshman guard Destiny Littleton earned a gold medal as part of the USA U18 3x3 FIBA World Cup Team, while sophomores Joyner Holmes and Alecia Sutton were part of the silver medalist USA U19 FIBA World Cup Team.
The incoming Texas freshmen - Rellah Boothe, Littleton and Chasity Patterson - were rated as the nation's No. 3 recruiting class of 2017, according to ESPN.com. Boothe, a 6-foot-3 forward, was rated the No. 3 prospect of the 2017 class, while Patterson, a 5-foot-6 guard, was the No. 4 overall recruit in 2017.
