Swimming trio wins medals at World University Games

Austin Katz and Jonathan Roberts win silver medals for Team USA while Joanna Evans claims bronze for The Bahamas.
TAIPEI CITY, Taiwan – Texas senior Jonathan Roberts, UT junior Joanna Evans and incoming freshman Austin Katz won medals for their respective nations Friday at the 29th World University Games.
Roberts, an All-American in all three individual events for Texas last March at the NCAA Championships, anchored Team USA's 4x200-meter freestyle relay to a silver medal. Roberts split 1 minute, 48.83 seconds on the relay's final leg, and the relay took the silver in 7:12.19. Japan won the gold in 7:08.45 while Russia took the bronze in 7:13.47.
Evans, an All-American for the Longhorns last March in the 200- and 1,650-yard freestyle events, won bronze for The Bahamas in the 800m freestyle. Evans, who swam two finals on the night, took third in 8:31.18. Italy's Simona Quadarella won gold for Italy in 8:20.54 while Germany's Sarah Koehler won silver in 8:21.67. Evans also placed eighth in the 200m freestyle final at 2:00.70.
Katz, who will join the Longhorns men upon his return from the World University Games, took silver in the 200m backstroke for Team USA at 1:56.70. He nearly ran down Danas Rapsys for gold, but the Lithuanian was victorious in 1:56.52. Russia's Roman Larin won bronze in 1:57.29.
