Longhorns to run at multiple road meets in Lone Star State
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Track & Field Head Coach Mario Sategna announced his team's schedule for the upcoming 2017-18 season on Friday. The Longhorns will host a pair of meets during the outdoor season and stick closer to home with more meets at in-state rivals during the indoor portion of the slate.
"Our coaching staff is really excited about the schedule we have been able to put together for the indoor and outdoor seasons," Sategna said. "We will be able to stay closer to home for a number of meets during the indoor season this year that will allow many of our fans the ability to travel a short distance and see us compete against some great teams and athletes. Plus having the outdoor conference championship up the road in Waco will be another great opportunity for us to compete in front of a large crowd, hopefully with a lot of Burnt Orange in the stands.
"Outdoors, we are looking forward to another great Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. James Bar and his operations crew do such a wonderful job every year of running that meet to perfection. We are excited to showcase our amazing facility again for one of the largest and best track meets held every year."
The Longhorns will get an earlier test than previous years with their first indoor meet set for December 16 at the Reveille Invitational hosted by Texas A&M. That will be the first of two more trips to College Station with the Aggie Invitational slated for Jan. 19-20. The Aggies will also host the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.
Texas will make a pair of trips to Texas Tech to compete at the Red Raiders' newly completed indoor facility. The first trip will be Jan. 13 with a two-day meet scheduled Jan. 26-27.
The entire team returns to Albuquerque this season for the New Mexico Classic on Feb. 2-3 after a small group has competed at the meet the last two years.
Then the team will split up for the first time when sprinters and jumpers head to the Tyson Invitational hosted by Arkansas on Feb. 9-10. During that weekend, the pole vaulters, throwers and distance runners will go back to Seattle, Washington, for the Husky Classic. Both those meets have become known for bringing in top talent for the events the Longhorns will compete in that weekend at the respective meets.
Before championship season starts for the indoor campaign, the distance runners will take one more crack at the Alex Wilson Invitational on Feb. 17.
Iowa State will again host the Big 12 Indoor Championship on Feb. 23-24 in Ames, Iowa, at the Lied Recreational Center. After a week off, the NCAA Indoor Championships will run March 9-10 in College Station.
Outdoors, the Longhorns will kick things off with back-to-back trips to San Antonio for meets hosted by UTSA. Texas will compete at the UTSA Invitational and the Roadrunners Invitational.
Then it will be time for the 91st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays presented by Spectrum. One of the largest meets in the country every year, the Longhorns are set to host another meet that will bring in some of the best talent in the nation from the high school, college and professional ranks to compete over four days from March 28-31.
After a week off after the Relays, the Longhorns will host the Texas Invitational on April 13-14 at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
A trip to Baylor for the Michael Johnson Classic on April 21 will give the Longhorns an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the Bears' facility before Baylor hosts the Big 12 Outdoor Championship on May 11-13.
A newly created meet will be on the schedule in late April for the Longhorns as Texas heads to Arkansas for the National Relays Championship. The Razorbacks have put together a meet that will put some of the top teams in the nation up against each other as one final test prior to their respective conference championship meets.
After the Big 12 meet, Sacramento State beings a two-year stint as the host of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds. This year's meet is set for May 24-26.
Oregon will again host the NCAA Outdoor Championships from Historic Hayward Field on June 6-9.
The schedule is tentative and subject to change.
