COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of Texas cross country programs were both in action on Saturday morning at the Texas A&M Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station. The two programs now turn their attention to the postseason, which begins in Ames, Iowa when Iowa State University hosts Big 12 Championships on Friday, Oct. 26. The South Central Regional Championship will be hosted by Texas A&M on Nov. 9 and NCAA Championships take place on Nov. 17 in Madison, Wisc.
The men were led by senior Alex Rogers to a third-place finish and finished first amongst teams in the South Central Region. Rogers finished seventh with a time of 24:32.3 to pace the Horns for the first time this season. John Rice and Sam Worley both finished in the top 20, as UT fell just five points shy of Big 12 Conference foe Oklahoma State. Pedro Nasta (25th) and Garek Bielaczyc (31st) rounded out the top five for the Longhorns.
"We need to find some consistency among our group," men's coach Pete Watson said after the meet. "Alex Rogers ran a very nice race and was competitive against some of the best runners in the country. We need to close the gap from 1-3 if we want to be competing for a championship in two weeks. We closed the gap on Oklahoma State from two weeks ago but we can still be better moving forward."
The women were led by fourth-place finisher Destiny Collins, who crossed the line in a time of 20:30.3. Alex Cruz was a top 15 finisher with a time of 21:09.5. The women finished fourth overall with 156 points. Abby Guidry, Madeline Vondra and Meghan Lloyd rounded out the Longhorns' scorers.
"Today gave us good racing experience on the regional championship course and also against a lot of competition we will see in the postseason," women's distance coach PattiSue Plumer said. "Destiny (Collins) continues to lead the way and our challenge now is closing the gap and getting some other women closer to the front. We know what we have to do to be ready for conference in two weeks."
