AUSTIN, Texas - Senior guard Danni Williams posted her best performance sporting the Burnt Orange with a 22-point outing to lead Texas (7-0) past UTSA (3-5), 98-54, on Wednesday morning at the Frank Erwin Center. The Erwin Center was packed with 9,495 fans, including nearly 7,000 kids representing fourth through seventh grade classes from 65 different schools for the eight-annual 40 Acres Field Trip.
Texas guards Williams and Audrey Warren were clicking early on offense as the two combined to score 10 of Texas' first 22 points, giving the Longhorns a nine-point advantage, 22-13, by the 3:49 mark of the first quarter. UTSA also got off to a hot start, knocking down their first five field goals. However, after that run Texas' swarming defense held the Roadrunners to just 23 percent shooting (3-13 FGs) from the floor as the Longhorns led, 26-17, after the first period of play.
The Longhorn defense rendered the UTSA offense one-dimensional, forcing the Roadrunners to take contested long-distance shots and holding them to just three made field goals (3-12), all of which were three-point baskets, in the second quarter. Texas would rattle off a 13-3 run over the last 4:42 of the second quarter as the Longhorns would take a 21-point lead, 50-29, into the locker room at the half.
Texas jumped out of the gate after half time, quickly racing out to a 19-2 run to begin the third quarter and extending the lead to 38, 69-31, by the 5:31 mark. The Longhorns fell just two points shy of the century-mark as they cruised to their seventh consecutive victory to start the season.
