ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Texas divers took home three medals on the third day of competition at the 2018 USA Diving Winter Trials at the McAuley Aquatics Center. The Longhorns earned a gold and silver in the women's 3-meter synchro event and a silver in the men's platform synchro event on Tuesday afternoon.
Redshirt senior Murphy Bromberg joined Brooke Schultz of the University of Arkansas to take the first-place finish on 3-meter synchro with a final score of 555.00. After leading at the end of the prelims, the pair put together their best dive of the finals in the third round with a forward 2.5 somersault 1 twist pike for 72.90 points. Bromberg was able to secure the win with Schultz over her Texas teammate, Alison Gibson.
Gibson and her partner, Krysta Palmer of the University of Nevada, headed into the finals trailing by just 5.28 points. The duo threw their best dive (64.17 points) of the afternoon with a forward 3.5 somersault pike in the fourth round before Bromberg and Schultz put it away on the last dive.
Longhorn junior Jacob Cornish secured his second medal of the 2018 USA Diving Winter Trials by teaming with Zach Cooper of Miami (FL) for a silver medal in the platform synchro finals. The pair put together two of the top-three dives of the afternoon in the finals with their reverse 3.5 somersault tuck (74.46 points) and forward 3.5 somersault pike (70.20 points) in the fifth and sixth rounds, respectively.
With the results today, Cornish and Bromberg qualified for the 2019 World University Games in Italy from July 1-8 next year. Gibson's the sixth Longhorn, including Cornish and Bromberg, to punch their ticket to Mission Viejo, Calif. for the 2019 FINA Diving Grand Prix.
