Career-high performances from Sug Sutton, Olamide Aborowa, and Destiny Littleton help the Longhorns surge past the Lady Demons.
AUSTIN, Texas—Sophomore guard Destiny Littleton led all scorers with a career-high 22-point outing as The University of Texas Women's Basketball team (10-2) defeated Northwestern State (5-6), 104-66, on Saturday afternoon at the Frank Erwin Center. Littleton was perfect from the charity stripe, shooting 11-for-11 from the line. As a team, Texas shot 12-of-19 from three-point range, setting the school record for the best team three-point percentage in a game (63.2 percent) in team history while tying the third-most three-pointers made all-time. Five Longhorns scored in double-figures and three players recorded career-high shooting performances in the win.
Junior guard Sug Sutton scored 18 points, including a perfect 4-for-4 clip from three-point distance, while also contributing four assists, three rebounds and three steals. Senior forward Olamide Aborowa provided a solid performance off the bench, scoring 17 points and pulling down six rebounds.
The Longhorn offense was clicking early as Texas connected on seven consecutive baskets, including three three-pointers by Sutton, to give UT a six-point advantage (20-14) at the 4:13 mark of the first quarter. Back-to-back three-pointers by senior guard Danni Williams extended the Texas lead to 12 (41-29) with 4:12 remaining in the half. Texas used a 13-0 run over the last 4:38 of the half, including another Williams three-pointer with 16 seconds left, to take a 23-point lead (52-29) into the locker room at halftime.
Texas began the start of the second half with an 11-0 run, including seven points from Littleton, as the Texas lead ballooned to 34 (63-29) at the 7:54 mark of the third quarter. The Longhorns would lead by as many as 41 (96-55) at the 4:26 mark of the fourth quarter.
KEY STATISTICS
- The Longhorns used the starting lineup of Joyner Holmes, Littleton, Audrey Warren, Sutton and Williams.
- In her first stint in the starting lineup, Littleton scored a career-high 22 points. Littleton posted career-highs in assists (seven) and free throws made (11). Littleton also recorded six rebounds in her 33 minutes of game play.
- Sutton had a career-high in points (18) while also knocking down a career-high four three-pointers in just 23 minutes of court time.
- Williams recorded another strong performance, scoring 15 points and connecting on 5-of-7 three-pointers. Williams knocked down five three-pointers for the sixth time, tying a career-high. Williams also pulled down eight rebounds, tying a game-high with junior forward Jada Underwood.
- Aborowa posted a career-high 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Aborowa also added six rebounds in 22 minutes of play off the bench.
- Junior guard/forward Joyner Holmes recorded 14 points and seven rebounds in 26 minutes of play. In her three starts this season Holmes has been averaging 11.7 points, six rebounds and 2.7 assists.
- Freshman guard Warren contributed eight points, four rebounds and two assists in 22 minutes of action.
- The Longhorns shot 63.2 percent (12-19 3FG) from three-point range. This is the highest three-point percentage in school history (previous record was 58.8 percent [10-17] against Kansas on January 28, 2014).
- Texas' 12 three-pointers made ties the third-most in team history (last vs. Oral Roberts on December 1, 2009).
- Texas scored 100 points for the first time since November 17, 2017 when the Longhorns defeated UTSA 120-70.
- The Longhorns defense forced Northwestern State to commit 15 turnovers, which they converted into 25 points.
